Celebrating 50 Years @ Racecourse Road – January 9 Maiden Plate Tips (Race 3)

Bairnsdale Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 3 Azzurri Queen

Plenty of jump-out experience prepared Azzurri Queen for her debut, including a victory at Mornington.

The filly made her race debut on a Heavy 9 at Moe just under two weeks later, where she stayed on well to finish third over 1017m.

Beaten just over half a length from a wide barrier, she again faces a double-figure draw here.

Although the form from that race is yet to be tested, the debut performance showed plenty of ability, while any further track downgrade would pose no concern.

Patrick Moloney knows the filly well after partnering her in several jump-outs and at Moe, and the pair look capable of recording a victory.

Bairnsdale Roughie - Race 5 No. 2 King Of Savoy

King Of Savoy failed to make an impact in four starts earlier this year but has shown improvement since joining trainer Trent Edmonds.

That turnaround has coincided with wet tracks and the addition of blinkers, having completed all four starts for previous trainer Matt Cumani on Good ground.

Third in a 1600m maiden here when returning to action, the gelding built on that effort by scoring narrowly over 2200m on a Soft 7 at Sale.

He performed well from a wide barrier first-up this preparation and should not face too many issues from barrier 12 over this distance.

Less exposed than many of his rivals, King Of Savoy may be capable of surprising despite facing winners for the first time.

Bairnsdale Value Bet - Race 6 No. 6 Cuban Dawn

Two strong efforts to begin the preparation saw Cuban Dawn finish in the placings on both occasions, including a second at Bendigo.

The six-year-old was beaten half a length over 1400m on a Soft 5 after being ridden cold from a wide barrier.

A disappointing tenth on the Ballarat synthetic track followed, although a post-race veterinary examination revealed mucus.

The Irish-bred gelding is tactically versatile and is better served by drawing barrier five here.

Although unproven on the forecast Soft 7, the conditions should not pose an issue, and Cuban Dawn rates as value under Steph Hateley.

Bairnsdale Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Racetothebottom

A strong record in wet conditions makes Racetothebottom an obvious contender, with placings in all but one of his five starts on Soft or Heavy ground.

The latest came over this course and distance last month, when he finished third in a similar race on a Soft 7.

Beaten five-and-a-half lengths, he was pushed along before the turn but stayed on well in a contest dominated by the first two runners in the market.

That was the five-year-old’s first appearance since August last year, and he should derive a significant fitness benefit from the run.

With barrier six providing a suitable draw, Racetothebottom is selected to break through at his seventh start.
