It was evident very quickly that the new ball is going to be very hard to handle for both teams with the quicks able to get it to swing early. Batting was an issue for both teams in the first ODI and it will not be any different in the second edition.
Despite Australia losing the first match, their batting order as a whole made more of an impact than Sri Lanka’s, which was saved by captain Charith Asalanka’s 127-run performance. Other than Asalanka’s heroics, the rest of the batting lineup scored just 87 runs.
Australia will be desperate to find some form as they head into the Champions Trophy and tallying runs on this wicket is the perfect test. I don’t see a lot runs coming from the Australians, but they will do enough to tie this series 1-1.

Australia Form
A tough day at the office for the Australians in their first ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo going down by 49 runs.
It was a difficult wicket for the batsmen but the most disappointing aspect of the match for the Aussies was the dismal performance of the openers Matthew Short (0 runs) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (2 runs), who once again were not up to the task to working in the new ball.
The opening pair are coming off a 3-game series against Pakistan where they totalled 78 runs between them and top scored with Short scoring 22 runs in the third match in Perth.
On the bowling front, it was a decent performance with the quality and depth shining as 4 bowlers took multiple wickets as Sean Abbot topped the group with 3, holding the home side to just 214 runs.
Australia Squad
Travis Head, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, Tanveer Sangha.
Sri Lanka Form
It was an important 49 run victory for Sri Lanka who will stay unbeaten in an ODI series on home soil in their past 11 contests with this being a 2-game series.
A captain’s knock by Charith Asalanka saved the day for the home team who also struggled facing the new ball, however, Asalanka was virtually unbeatable, scoring 127 from 126 balls, the only man on the pitch the whole day that got his eye in.
The rest of the Sri Lanka order couldn’t manage more than 30 runs (Dunith Wellalage) and a total of just 83 runs between them.
Asitha Fernado tore through the openers of Australia like a hot knife through butter then Maheesh Theekshana did the rest with figures of 4/40 and an economy of 4.06.
