How Does the Ignite Cup Work?
- Every Wednesday night game counts. These games still contribute to the regular season ladder, but they also feed into a separate Ignite Cup standings table.
- Quarter-by-quarter scoring. Teams get the usual 3 points for a win, but also 1 point for every quarter won. If a quarter is tied, each team receives 0.5 points.
- Standalone Final. At the end of the Cup’s run, the top two teams will meet in an Ignite Cup Final at a special location to be announced.
The Prize Money
The Ignite Cup features the biggest payday in NBL history:
- $400,000 total prize pool
- $300,000 for the winner
- $100,000 for the runner-up
- In a league-first, 60% goes directly to the players, with the remaining 40% to the clubs.
This ensures that the athletes themselves share the biggest rewards, creating added motivation in every quarter.
Why It Matters
The Ignite Cup brings new competitive fire to the NBL:
- High stakes every quarter: No more junk time — every possession matters until the final whistle.
- Bigger fan experience: Themed nights, new entertainment and a midweek spotlight.
- More hoops: 21 extra games, plus a new Final outside the traditional schedule.
As NBL CEO David Stevenson put it, this is about “creating more blockbuster games and fresh energy for our fans every single Wednesday night.”
When Will Ignite Cup Games Be Played?
Ignite Cup games will be played on Wednesdays throughout the season with only these matches deciding who will play in the Ignite Cup Final in February, 2026.
