Sydney Swans vs Geelong Cats, Round 23 2025 - Expert Prediction

Sydney and Geelong square off at the SCG in what could be a finals-shaping battle between two in-form sides.

The Swans have won five of their past six and continue to defy injury setbacks with gritty, high-pressure footy and midfield depth. They edged out Brisbane by two points at the GABBA last weekend.

Geelong come into this red hot, having won 10 of their last 12 and averaging over 100 points a game during that stretch. But a number of those have come against weaker sides, including their past four. Last week, it was an unconvincing 44-point win over Essendon at GMHBA Stadium.

Sydney at the SCG will be a different beast. The Swans continue to lack tall forward options but Errol Gulden, Isaac Heeney, and Chad Warner are all finishing the season off in style. That trio can trouble the Cats

Geelong have the obvious firepower — Jeremy Cameron is up to 79 goals for the season and the elusive 100 is in sight, while Shannon Neale and Tyson Stengle are among other forward threats.

But with the home ground, combined with the way they are finishing off, back the Swans to stay within the line. Errol Gulden will find plenty of the footy for the Swans, while Tyson Stengle can bob up with a couple of goals for the Cats.

  • Sydney have won five of their past six.
  • The Swans were 30 point winners the last time the two sides met
  • Errol Gulden has had 30 disposals in two of his past three matches, he had 29 in the other
  • Tyson Stengle has kicked 2+ goals in three of his past four matches

Head to Head

The two sides have not met this season. Sydney were 30 point winners the last time the two sides met, which was back in Round 13 last season. Errol Gulden had 37 disposals in that match, while Tom Papley booted four goals. Tyson Stengle snagged three goals for the Cats.

Papley has booted nine from his past five for Sydney, while Jeremy Cameron has kicked nine from his past three for Geelong. Sydney’s Chad Warner has had 25+ disposals in three of his past four against Geelong, while Gulden has hit that mark in his past two.

Sydney have won five of their past six matches with the only loss coming against GWS three weeks ago when blowing a 28-point half-time lead. Eight of their past nine matches have landed in the 1-39 point margin.

With their key forwards, Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey, out of action for the majority of this season, Sydney have had to find alternative ways to goal. Isaac Heeney produced another brilliant match last weekend with five goals and leads the Swans goal-kicking with 35 majors for the season.
Heeney had 23 disposals against Brisbane, while Errol Gulden (29), Angus Sheldrick (26) and Chad Warner (26) all hit the 25+. Gulden has had 30 disposals in two of his past three matches.
