GWS Giants vs Richmond Tigers AFL Round 5 Tips - Good matchup for the Tigers

The Richmond Tigers, despite an 0-4 start, are predicted to edge out the GWS Giants in their Round 5 clash, largely due to the Giants' injury woes. While neither team has found consistent form, Richmond shows potential in patches, led by Tim Taranto's midfield control. With Lachie Whitfield marshalling ball movement for GWS, the matchup remains open, though Richmond is expected to cover the 30.5-point underdog spread in what’s predicted to be a low-scoring game. GWS's inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities could offer Richmond the advantage they need.

GWS Giants vs Richmond Tigers, Round 5 2026 - Expert Prediction

Richmond are winless but are they as bad as their 0-4 record suggests? GWS aren’t so crash hot either so back the Tigers with the points.
The Tigers have been a tough meet for the Giants over the last four seasons, despite the clear difference in class, the record is split at 2-2 including a slim 80-77 victory for Western Sydney in 2025.

With the Giants in injury trouble, it is just one victory that splits these two teams after Round 4 and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Tigers claw that back this week. Richmond are cubs, not tigers, and they have played well for long patches in all their games, but can’t string 4 quarters together. The best way for a young cub to build its confidence, hunt a lame target, which is just what the Giants are right now.

The Giants should take this one but current form and trends do leave this match open.

With the cubs still blooming, veteran Tim Taranto has taken charge and is running the midfield as efficiently as he can. If the Tigers are to stay in this one it is going to take a big effort from Taranto.

With the Giants under heavy defensive pressure, Lachie Whitfield has been the dictator of ball movement at the half-back line and although the Tigers might not throw as much at them as their previous opponents, Whitfield will still see plenty of ball and link his mids with 30+ disposals.

  • Richmond have covered the +31.5 line in 8 of their last 9 games against GWS.
  • 6 of 9 the last 9 matches between GWS and Richmond have gone under the 178.5 total.
  • Tim Taranto averages 24.75 disposals in 2026
  • Lachie Whitfield has averaged 32 disposals in his last 3 matches against Richmond.

Head to Head Stats

GWS edged out Richmond by 3 points in Round 12 of the 2025 season after the Tigers led by 34 points at 17:22 in the third quarter.

It was the second consecutive win for the Giants, however, the head to head record is at 5-5 since the 2019 season.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

Since shocking the Hawks in Round 1, the 2026 season has not gone the way GWS would have liked, with the obvious ‘excuse’ being their list of injuries that is longer than the one you take to Coles at Christmas.

Sustaining any sort of pressure has been difficult for the Giants, who have been more susceptible to rebound 50s than any other side in the competition with 46.8 per game, getting hurt heavily on the counter, unable to contain their opponents in their own half.

Surprisingly, the Giants have been able to get the ball inside 50 at a pretty decent rate themselves, however, they create the least amount of scoring shots per entry at 37.8%, kicking a major just 18.5% of the time

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

The Tigers are winless in 2026 suffering from real growing pains at the moment. Adam Yze’s troops have played really well in periods, however have not been able to hold the tempo and have been crushed by 40+ in their last 3 matches.

Lack of defensive pressure has seen them play long stretches of the match without any positive possessions ranked bottom 4 in all possession categories. Inside 50s have been too few at 45.5 per game and once they enter they have been wasteful, converting just 16.5% into goals.

Veterans Tim Taranto and Jayden Short have been the most influential, however, Yze is still waiting for his draft picks to start maturing and get to the level he needs for the Tigers to compete.
