The Sydney Swans are expected to achieve a narrow victory over the Gold Coast Suns in Round 5 of the 2026 AFL season. Despite their ability to elevate their game, the momentum and form remain with the Swans, who recently secured a commanding win over West Coast. Key stats indicate that a total game score under 192.5 points is likely, with individual performances from players like Riley Bice and John Noble being pivotal. The Suns will need to overcome their previous underwhelming record in Adelaide to pose a significant challenge.

Sydney Swans vs Gold Coast Suns, Round 5 2026 - Expert Prediction

This one is a tough call and is definitely a game that goes in the category of whoever plays better on the day will get up. That being said, it is the Swans that do look the sharpest and have the game style to beat the Suns.
Melbourne showed last week what fast ball movement can do the Gold Coast and if there is a team in the AFL that is looking slicker than any it is the Swans. Sydney outclassed West Coast by 100+ last week and although the Suns are definitely a different beast, the fast ball movement through the middle and aggressiveness inside 50 is the recipe the Demons used to cook the Gold Coast, without Petracca in the midfield.

The Gold Coast do have another level than they showed against Melbourne last week and can step up to the challenge, but if the edge and momentum is definitely with Swans. Then there is the Gold Coast’s record in Adelaide winning just once in 15 matches in South Australia, which was at Barossa Oval at last year’s Gather Round against North Melbourne.

Both halfback lines are going to be influential in this game, as both teams will look to control the possession and get clean ball out of their 50. Riley Bice has seen even more time on the oval in 2026 and plays link exceptional as his disposal count has reason over the last 3 matches. On the other side, John Noble will need to withstand plenty of pressure from the Swans and will also get plenty of touches for the Suns.

Thai match will bog down for periods and stay under the large total that is heavily affected by both teams strength of schedule early in their seasons. Sydney will likely fly away from Gather Round with the points.

  • Sydney have won 3 of the last 4 matches against the Gold Coast.
  • Only 1 of the 18 games played between Sydney and Gold Coast has had a game total over 192.5.
  • Riley Bice averages 26.33 disposals in his last 3 matches.
  • John Noble has had 25+ disposals in 3 of 4 matches this season.

Head to Head Stats

The Suns took their first match against the Swans in 4 matches in Round 7, 2025, beating Sydney 117-79.

4 of the last 6 games between the Suns and Swans have gone over the match total.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

The Swans responded in emphatic fashion to their loss to Hawthorn in Round 2, belting West Coast by 128 points at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.

It certainly helped that the Eagles kicked 4.11, bombing any chances they had, but they were outclassed by Sydney who dominated every aspect of the match. The Swans moved the ball slick and fast and the Eagles were simply powerless to stop it. Toby Grundy topped the sheet with 28 disposals along with his 33 hitouts, while the usual suspects in Chad Warner (24 disposals, 9 clearance) and Isaac Heeney (4 goals, 26 disposals) played their part in the drubbing.

The Swannies are absolutely flying. They are efficient inside 50 with a 28.7% goal to entry efficiency and are ranked sixth in possessions and have a 73.8 disposal efficiency. They move the ball better than any in the competition at the moment and are a real threat for the premiership if they stay healthy.

Gold Coast Suns Form Analysis

Gold Coast were unable to get their usual pressure on their opponents after coming off their bye and were ousted by the Melbourne Demons 109-89 on Sunday.

Melbourne played fast and moved the ball forward with relative ease through the majority of the match and then did nothing to respond in the fourth quarter when the match was on the line. The Demons won the inside 50 count 59-45 and had 29 scoring shots to the Suns 19.

Were the Gold Coast flat or is this what is to be expected, it is hard to say considering they started better pushing out to an early 16-point lead. Petracca’s calming presence was definitely missing in the midfield and Brownlow medalist Matt Rowell certainly eased his way back with just 13 disposals and 4 clearances, playing 77% of the match.

After a soft opening 3 matches, the season gets real for the Gold Coast who will need to show their maturity over the next month if they are true contenders.
