WTA Indian Wells Outright Tips & Predictions - Bencic good value in the desert; Mboko set for another deep WTA 1000 run?

The upcoming WTA Indian Wells tournament is highlighted by intriguing matchups and conditions favoring certain player profiles. Analysts are staying away from top seeds like Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina, pointing out the potential value of picks like Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari. The challenging playing conditions involve a medium-slow hardcourt with desert wind exposure, impacting match strategies. The tournament will test players' adaptability and endurance across different demands. Rising star Victoria Mboko is also set to challenge big names, promising an exciting competition ahead.

WTA Indian Wells Outright Tips & Predictions

I'm keen to stay away from the top seeds, who are in questionable form ahead of the '5th Slam' at Indian Wells - Belinda Bencic offers value, Maria Sakkari should be monitored and Victoria Mboko targets more WTA 1000 upsets.

Bottom half value - Bencic & Sakkari

I'll be opposing each of the top four seeds in Indian Wells for this tournament and the two who landed in the bottom half are Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina.

Swiatek hasn't really been at her peak for the better part of the last year, save for that run to the Wimbledon silverware. The Pole was crushed by Rybakina in the Australian Open quarter-finals and in her other two tournaments, she was beaten by the two players I mentioned in the title, with Bencic conquering her in the United Cup and Sakkari in Doha. Swiatek then pulled out of Dubai.

I'm conscious of these conditions suiting Swiatek to a tee and the fact she's a two-time champion demonstrates that, but Sakkari is also a two-time runner-up in the Californian desert and just beat the second seed. The Greek's confidence is back and she's playing at a tournament where she knows she can beat anyone.

In the third quarter, Bencic looks primed for a nice run. Jessica Pegula is her seeded R16 opponent - and while the American is in good form after winning Dubai, she has only been past the fourth round once at Indian Wells. Her flat game style just doesn't compliment the high-bouncing and slower conditions. Bencic is also 2-0 against Rybakina in completed matches if the pair end up meeting in the quarter-finals.

Defending champion Mirra Andreeva has been struggling for a while and isn't favoured to repeat her stunning surge to the title from 12 months ago. Elina Svitolina is certainly someone capable of going deep and has been on fire to start the season, but Bencic and Sakkari are my picks here.

Wide open second quarter

Take your pick in this section. Hard to justify anyone making the final four. Gauff's serve is in utter shambles again and she's been eliminated before the quarter-finals in more than half of her previous Indian Wells appearances. Jasmine Paolini has endured a very slow start to 2026 and was last seen losing to Cristina Bucsa in Merida. The Italian also didn't win a set between the Australian Open and Merida. No thanks.

The mid-tier seeds in this section have all failed to make it past the third round of Indian Wells - these include Clara Tauson, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Diana Shnaider and Linda Noskova. Staying away.

Alexandra Eala - the new global sensation of tennis - could benefit, but I've still got question marks over her consistency and she's just had a big Middle East campaign. Too much, too soon? Sorana Cirstea could be someone to keep an eye on. The Romanian - who is retiring at season's end - has put together a tremendous start to 2026 with a 12-3 record and has made the quarter-finals here before. A small stake to win this quarter perhaps...

Can Mboko fire again?

The top quarter is stacked and where the action is. Aryna Sabalenka is playing for the first time since her Australian Open final defeat to Rybakina and has never won Indian Wells before. She could face Naomi Osaka or Iva Jovic in the R16 and beyond that, Victoria Mboko or Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals. Tough.

If we're going on sustained form throughout the year, then Mboko might be worth a sneaky punt to come through this quarter. The 19-year-old's meteoric rise has continued, making the final of Adelaide, the R16 of the AO (lost to Sabalenka) and the final of Doha, where she beat Rybakina and Andreeva before falling to Karolina Muchova. Mboko of course made her breakthrough by winning the WTA 1000 title at home in Montreal. We saw one teenager win the title at Indian Wells 12 months ago, could lightning strike twice in the desert?

Mboko might need Osaka to knock out Sabalenka in the R16, but I'd certainly back her against Anisimova, who hasn't been anywhere close to her best to start the season. Sabalenka is the easy pick for this quarter and the title, but I don't like the short-ish odds for a player who hasn't competed since January and has never won here before.
