It feels like we've been waiting for that one big result or deep run in a notable tournament from Osaka since she returned to the tour a couple of years ago, but although she keeps making gradual improvements, we're yet to see that standout performance that really says, 'she's back'. A win over the 13th seed here wouldn't do that, but it would certainly help Osaka as she continues her bid to get back towards the top of the game and add to her four Grand Slam titles.
This isn't a bad draw for the former World No. 1. Osaka has won both previous hardcourt meetings between the pair, including a straight sets triumph in Miami earlier this season. Samsonova is probably at her best on grass, and while she's obviously a very accomplished player across all surfaces, she's also inconsistent and is playing her first match on hardcourt since that Miami defeat to Osaka in March. No reason why Osaka can't make it three hardcourt wins on the trot over the Russian here.
Head To Head
Currently split at 2-2. As mentioned, Osaka has won both hardcourt encounters at Indian Wells 2024 and Miami 2025 in straight sets. Samsonova's two wins both came in three sets, firstly at Madrid 2024 and then earlier this season in Berlin.
Liudmila Samsonova Form
Samsonova comes into this clash with a 24-16 record on the season and ranked at No. 16 in the world, four spots off her career-high.
Apart from a semi-final appearance in Adelaide, it wasn't a great start to the season for Samsonova, but she's really picked things up over the last couple of month.
It all started with a run to the Strasbourg final just before the French Open, where she went on to make the fourth round.
Unsurprisingly, Samsonova was excellent on grass, reaching the Berlin semi-finals with wins over the likes of Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova before making the R16 at Wimbledon, where it took eventual champion Iga Swiatek to stop her.
Samsonova has enjoyed great success in Canada over the years, registering an 8-3 record at the tournament, highlighted by a run to the final of Montreal in 2023 before making the quarter-finals in Toronto last year.
Naomi Osaka Form
Osaka has registered a 22-11 record at all levels this season and remains just inside the top 50 at No. 49 in the world coming into this showdown.
The Japanese had an extremely promising start to the season in making the final of Auckland, but unfortunately she had to retire injured and that really halted any progress that was made.
There has been some decent results sprinkled in over the course of the season - Osaka made the R16 of Miami, won her first ever clay tournament at the WTA 125k L'Open 35 de Saint Malo and also the R16 in Rome.
After reaching the third round of Wimbledon, Osaka returned to her beloved hardcourts, but she would have been disappointed with a 4-6 2-6 loss to Emma Raducanu in the second round of Washington last week.
Osaka hasn't got the best record in Canada, going 6-5 throughout her career, with her best result being a quarter-final run in 2019. The 27-year-old was a 6-4 6-2 winner over Canadian qualifier Ariana Arseneault in her opening round.
