Leylah Fernandez vs Maya Joint Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Leylah Fernandez will be aiming to keep her winning momentum rolling into her home Canadian Open as she gets her tournament up and running with a first round showdown against rising Aussie teenager Maya Joint on Tuesday in Montreal.

Fernandez has endured a tough few years since coming from nowhere to make the US Open final in 2021, but she reminded everyone of just how high her peak level can be when she surged to the WTA 500 title in Washington last week. In a draw featuring four top 20 players, Fernandez defeated the likes of Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina (along with Joint too) on her way to the biggest title of her career. Now the tough part begins - backing that form up, playing under the pressure of a home crowd and maintaining that level of consistency week in and week out.

Joint meanwhile will be relishing another crack at Fernandez after falling to her in the opening round of Washington. The 19-year-old has put together an incredible breakout season on tour, winning two WTA titles and cracking the top 50. With a quick turnaround, Fernandez might get off to a slow start in this one, but if she can find the level she did last week, then the Canadian is the deserved favourite here.

Head To Head

Fernandez leads 1-0, winning their Washington first round clash 6-3 6-3 last week.

Leylah Fernandez Form

Prior to arriving in Washington for last week's tournament, Fernandez had a negative 16-17 match record on the season and was looking like crashing out of the top 50 by season's end.

However, the Canadian produced her best tennis in years to capture the biggest title of her career, defeating Joint, Pegula and Rybakina before crushing Anna Kalinskaya 6-1 6-2 in the final.

Fernandez has climbed up to No. 24 in the latest WTA rankings and will now be aiming to continue her resurgent form at the Canada Open, where she has struggled in the past, failing to go beyond the third round in five previous main draw appearances.

Still just 22 years of age, Fernandez will be hoping to put together another big North American summer just like 2021, where she made the US Open final before going down to Emma Raducanu.

Maya Joint Form

It's been an extraordinary rise for Joint over the last couple of years, with the Aussie compiling a 38-18 record at all levels in 2025 to break into the top 50.

The 19-year-old has won two WTA titles in Rabat and Eastbourne this season and will be looking to make an impact on North American hardcourts, where she's played a lot of her junior tennis.

Joint will be hoping to get back to winning ways - she hasn't tasted victory since lifting the title on the grass of Eastbourne, losing her Wimbledon opener to Liudmila Samsonova before last week's Washington defeat to Fernandez.

This will be Joint's first ever match at the Canada Open.

Verdict

Joint is having a great year and would have learned a lot from that Washington defeat last week - I think the Aussie can take advantage of a potential slow start from Fernandez, but the Canadian is likely to prevail in three if she maintains her current level.
