Jelena Ostapenko vs Naomi Osaka Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Osaka targets Montreal R16
Naomi Osaka is set to face Jelena Ostapenko in a thrilling match at the Canada Open for a chance to advance to the round of 16. Osaka, having recently scored a significant win against Liudmila Samsonova, looks to maintain her momentum with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski by her side. Ostapenko, while inconsistent, has proven dangerous against top players. However, her history in Canada isn't strong. Head-to-head, Osaka leads 2-0 and seems poised for another straight-set victory. Osaka is full of confidence after saving two match points to defeat Liudmula Samsonova in her previous round, registering her first top 20 victory since January. The four-time major champion got off to a winning start with new coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and she will be hoping the next couple of months can elevate her back towards the top of the game. Meanwhile, former French Open champion Ostapenko continues to be wildly inconsistent and is targeting just her second back-to-back wins on a hardcourt since Dubai 2024 here.
I feel this is a great opportunity for Osaka to continue building momentum. She's beaten Ostapenko twice before - and both victories came in dominant straight sets. Ostapenko has also never made it beyond the third round of the Canada Open in eight previous main draw appearances. Backing Osaka in straights.
Head To Head
Osaka leads 2-0, winning their first meeting 6-4 7-5 back at the 2016 French Open before cruising in a 6-3 6-2 victory at the 2024 US Open.
Jelena Ostapenko Form
Ostapenko comes into this contest with a 17-14 record on the season and currently ranked No. 26 in the world.
One of the flashiest and most inconsistent players on tour, it doesn't really come as much surprise that 10 of those 17 wins have come at two tournaments.
Indeed, Ostapenko finished runner-up at the WTA 1000 event in Doha, beating the likes of Iga Swiatek and Jasmine Paolini along the way, while she also surged to the Stuttgart title, conquering three top 10 players - including Swiatek once again, along with Emma Navarro and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Ostapenko has proven time and time again she can beat anyone on her day, but doing it week in and week out is the reason she's not inside the top 10 herself.
The Latvian has never been past the third round at the Canada Open, but has given herself a chance after edging Renata Zarazua 6-2 4-6 6-2 in her opening match, snapping a four-match losing run on hardcourt in the process.
Naomi Osaka Form
Osaka brings a 22-11 match record at all levels into this encounter and will be hoping for a deep run in Montreal to steel herself for the upcoming US Open, which - in my opinion - represents her best chance to make an impact at a major.
The former World No. 1 has shown glimpses of her best tennis throughout the season, reaching the final in Auckland (before injury forced her retirement) and winning her first ever clay title at the WTA 125k L'Open 35 de Saint Malo. Osaka has also made the third round of the Australian Open, the R16 in Miami and Rome and the third round of Wimbledon.
As you can see, Osaka is getting starts at a lot of tournaments, but going on that one big run remains elusive.
Osaka has put herself in another position to go deep in Montreal, saving two match points in a thrilling 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 win over 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova after earlier defeating local wildcard Ariana Arseneault in straights.

Great chance for Osaka to make the R16 and I think she takes it.
