The 2025 tennis season comes to an official close in Jeddah as the eight best male players aged 20 and younger battle it out for the right to be crowned the Next Gen champion - and there's one player that stands out amongst the pack.
Firstly, let's check out the eight-player field that will compete at the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals.

Learner Tien - The Undisputed Dominant Force in Jeddah
As you can see, Tien is the only player ranked in the top 100, with the 19-year-old putting together a meteoric rise into the world's top 30, which will likely see him seeded for the 2026 Australian Open - which is crazy considering he played qualifying at Melbourne Park at the start of this year.
The American won his maiden ATP title towards the end of the year indoors at Metz, while he was also the runner-up at the ATP 500 China Open in Beijing. Additionally, Tien compiled a sensational 5-3 record against top 10 players in 2025, further highlighting his ability to beat the very best.
A runner-up in Jeddah 12 months ago, it will take a colossal showing from one of the other seven competitors to stop Tien from lifting the trophy.

Tien Trend To Follow
One notable trend for Tien that relates to this tournament is his record against players outside the top 100 this year. Indeed, Tien registered an 8-1 record against that group of player - and every single one of those victories came in straight sets.
With the rest of the field ranked outside the top 100, Tien could bulldoze his way to the title without dropping a single set.

Underdogs To Watch
The remaining seven players are fairly evenly matched, but I'm liking Alexander Blockx of Belgium to make a deep run.
Blockx looks ready to take that next step and cement himself as a tour-level player in 2026 after almost cracking the top 100 this season, peaking at 101 and settling at 116 after starting 2025 outside the top 200. The 20-year-old enjoyed a strong finish to the season, capturing the 125 Challenger title in Bratislava, where he conquered two top 100 players in Raphael Collignon and Jan-Lennard Struff along the way.

Dino Prizmic is someone I would ordinarily back as an outside chance - but the Croatian has endured an injury-riddled start to his pro career and was last seen retiring in Stockholm qualifying. The 20-year-old has only won one match since August and arrives in Jeddah underdone - but his best tennis is certainly capable of making the final and he is someone to monitor after his opening match.
Justin Engel is my genuine dark horse. The German, who just turned 18 in October, became the second-youngest player after Rafael Nadal (since 1990) to win tour-level matches on all three surfaces (hard, clay, grass) at 17 years, 8 months old, following his Stuttgart run in June, where he also reached his first ATP 250 quarter-final. Engel has showcased he already has the game to beat established ATP players and after entering the draw as an alternate following the withdrawal of Jakub Mensik, the teenager has nothing to lose and his playing with house money - making him even more dangerous.
