Shelton is hoping to bounce back from some disappointing Grand Slam exits during the European summer and with the draw opening up slightly in Washington, he would fancy himself to begin the North American hardcourt swing with a title here. The American has excelled at ATP 500 level in 2026, compiling a 13-2 record, including winning two titles in Dallas and Munich.

Meanwhile, Humbert's season has been solid without being spectacular - he's again thrived in indoor and grass conditions, keeping a spot inside the world's top 30. However, the Frenchman has a 0-3 record against the top 10 this year, highlighting that he keeps falling short when coming up against the game's elite at the moment.

One of those defeats was against Shelton at the start of the year at the Australian Open. Humbert lost in straights, but it was a relatively close match with two tiebreaks and I'd expect a similar sort of outcome here in the American capital.

Shelton is a different beast in these conditions and you get the feeling he's really pushing for a title here to restore some confidence. I'm backing the American to come out on top again with at least one tiebreak.

It's been a mixed bag of performances for Shelton in 2026.

The 23-year-old has picked up three ATP titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart, but also suffered some early exits at Masters 1000 and Grand Slam level.

Shelton went out to Raphael Collignon in the second round of Roland Garros and Otto Virtanen in the opening round of Wimbledon - unusual defeats for a man who typically thrives on the big stage in the most important tournaments.

The American has made the semi-finals in his last two Washington appearances and will have his sights set on another deep run this week after overcoming Martin Damm 6-4 4-6 6-4 in a rain-affected opening round contest.

It hasn't been a bad season for Humbert so far, but he's still not at the level he was a couple of years ago, where he was on the brink of cracking the top 10.

Humbert had a great start to the season, winning the Adelaide title and making the semi-finals of Rotterdam, while he also played well on the grass, finishing runner-up in Eastbourne and making the semis of Queens.

But results at the big tournaments are lacking - Humbert hasn't made it past the R16 of a Masters or second round of a slam so far this year, something he will be hoping to change over the coming month in North America.

Humbert is unbeaten in Washington after being forced to withdraw in the quarter-finals of his only previous appearance in 2023. The Frenchman had a nice draw in his opening round and was untroubled in a 6-2 7-5 victory over No. 385 qualifier Andres Martin.
