Alexander Zverev continues his Paris Masters title defence when he squares off against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the R16 on Thursday night in the French capital.

Zverev has always performed well in Paris, but it's been a disappointing season for the German and it would take a monumental effort to defend his crown over the next few days. Zverev was fortunate enough to avoid top 10 players on his way to the Paris title and that might need to happen again if he's to go back-to-back. It wasn't a great start to Zverev's title defence - he barely scraped by clay specialist Ugo Camilo Carabelli, prevailing 7-5 in the decider after being a break down.

Meanwhile, Davidovich Fokina is enjoying a career-best season and is up to a live ranking of No. 13, while he's also still in contention for the ATP Finals - although he'd need to win the Paris title and maybe even a 250 next week. Nevertheless, the Spaniard is in great form after reaching the Basel final last week, while he pushed Zverev all the way in Madrid earlier this year. I'm backing Davidovich Fokina to cover a +2.5 games line and he's a solid chance at the upset if Zverev doesn't improve drastically.

Zverev leads 5-1, but they've only played once since 2023 - and that came earlier this season in Madrid, where Davidovich Fokina was on the cusp of victory but ultimately fell 6-2 6-7 6-7.

Zverev heads into this encounter with a 52-22 record on the season, where he's basically been below his best for the entire year.

It just hasn't really clicked for Zverev since he reached the Australian Open final in January - and even then, he needed Novak Djokovic to retire in the semis.

The German has only won the one title in Munich and crashed out early at Wimbledon in the second round to Arthur Rinderknech and in the third round of the US Open to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Zverev also bombed out of Shanghai in his second match to Rinderknech once again, but restored some confidence with a run to the final of Vienna last week, where he pushed Jannik Sinner all the way before going down 7-5 in the third.

However, just as it looked like Zverev might be turning a corner, he delivered a sub-par performance in his Paris opener, barely surviving Ugo Camilo Carabelli - a player who had only ever won one tour-level match indoors. Zverev dropped the first set in a tiebreak and recovered from a break down in the decider to ultimately scrape through by a 6-7 6-1 7-5 score.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Form

It's been a career-best season for Davidovich Fokina, who comes into this showdown with a brilliant 44-25 record and at live ranking of No. 13.

Davidovich Fokina has found some consistency, which has been tough for him throughout his career - however, he's still without an ATP title after some heartbreaking defeats throughout 2025.

The Spaniard has made four finals this year and blew championship points in two of them at Delray Beach and Washington, while he also finished runner-up in Acapulco and last week in Basel to Joao Fonseca.

Davidovich Fokina has conquered a pair of Frenchman on his way to the Paris R16 this week, overcoming Valentin Royer in three sets before dispatching Arthur Cazaux in straights.
