In a high-stakes AFC Champions League match, Melbourne City will host Gangwon FC as both sides aim for essential wins. Melbourne City, currently fourth on the ladder, can potentially finish in the top two but requires a victory and favorable outcomes in other matches. Meanwhile, Gangwon FC, holding onto the eighth spot, needs a win to ensure advancement to the knockout phase. While City boasts a strong recent form, Gangwon must overcome minimal match exposure. The encounter is predicted to see Under 2.5 goals, with a potential draw benefiting Gangwon.

Melbourne City vs Gangwon FC Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Melbourne City will be aiming to secure a top two finish as the AFC Champions League Elite league phase comes to a close on Wednesday night, with the reigning A-League winners welcoming Gangwon FC to AAMI Park.

After losing their opening two matches of the competition, City have picked up 13 points out of a possible 15, surging into fourth spot on the ladder and with the opportunity to finish inside the top two. However, for that to happen, City would need to win this game and hope Japanese sides Sanfrecce and Machida Zelvia both fail to win their final league phase matches. Meanwhile, Gangwon are clinging onto the eighth and last qualifying spot and need to win in order to ensure their passage through to the knockout stage.

City are well-rested after last week's dramatic late win over Ulsan and will want to finish the league phase on a high, with the potential to make the top two. Similarly, Gangwon will be going all out for the win, but have the disadvantage of barely playing competitive matches over the last few months, with the new K-League season not starting until the end of this month. It's a tough match to call, but City have been hard to beat in this competition lately, while Under 2.5 goals has been the trend more often than not this season. As the matches go on, Gangwon may well realise a draw could be enough to see them qualify too. I'll back a share of the spoils with minimal goals here.
  • City are unbeaten in their last five CL games
  • Gangwon have won just two of their seven CL games
  • City have seen Under 2.5 goals in 11 of their last 16 games in all comps
  • Gangwon have seen Under 2.5 goals in six of their last eight games
  • Gangwon have drawn their last two CL games
  • City have drawn two of their last three games in all comps, scoring a stoppage time goal in the one win
  • City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six games
  • City are unbeaten in their last four meetings with South Korean teams

Melbourne City Form Analysis

It's been a remarkable run for City as the reigning A-League champions secured their spot in the knockout phase with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ulsan last week on the road.

City are now the first Australian team since 2020 to qualify for the knockout phase of the Asian Champions League Elite.

“We are very, very young side, and to be able to get to the next round is a true testament of the right attitude and the characters of players that we have here in this group, " City coach Aurelio Vidmar said after the win over Ulsan.
“So (I’m) pleased for the players and also very pleased for the club.”

Max Caputo scored his third goal of the campaign in the win over Ulsan, with winger Marcus Younis volleying home the winner in stoppage time. Younis has now scored three goals and registered one assist in four appearances for City since joining on loan from Danish club Brondby.

City aren't travelling as well in the A-League this term, winning just two of their last 10 games to be languishing in seventh spot on the table.

Gangwon FC Form Analysis

Gangwon have put themselves in a must-win position on the final matchday in order to guarantee their place in the knockout phase.

Chung Kyung-ho's side have gone winless in their last four Champions League outings, suffering defeats to top two sides Sanfrecce and Machida before back-to-back draws against Buriram and Shanghai Port.

Gangwon missed a golden opportunity to secure their top eight spot with a home game against last-placed Shanghai Port, but they couldn't convert their chances, dominating with 62 per cent of possession and 11 total shots to two.

Although, to be fair, it was Gangwon's first competitive match of the year after they finished last season's K-League in November, where they ended up in sixth spot on the ladder.
