Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners find themselves in the lower rankings of the A-League, both keen for a crucial win in their upcoming match at Sky Stadium. With a congested ladder, three points could see either team dramatically improve their standings. Both teams have struggled defensively, making a high-scoring game likely. Wellington recently lost a thrilling 3-1 match against the Jets, while Central Coast is winless in their last four outings. Analysts see a draw as the most probable outcome, given five of their last eight head-to-heads have ended in stalemates.

Wellington Phoenix vs Central Coast Mariners Tips & Prediction

Level on points languishing near the bottom of the ladder, Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast Mariners are both desperate for three points when they conclude A-League Round 9 action at Sky Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It's another wild A-League ladder coming into Round 9, with just two points separating 12th from 5th, so three points here for Phoenix and the Mariners could potentially catapult them into the top six, depending on other results. On the flip side, a defeat could leave them anchored to the bottom of the ladder. Fine margins.

It's a tough game to predict, but I expect both teams to score. Wellington were involved in arguably the most entertaining game of the season last week against the Jets, with a total of 36 shots as they went down 3-1. Phoenix conceded 20 of those shots and look extremely vulnerable at the back. Meanwhile, the Mariners are now winless in four straight games after going down 2-1 to Auckland last week. Hard to favour any side here, so a share of the spoils looks good value - especially when you consider five of the last eight meetings between the sides have ended in a draw.

Head To Head

One of those draws was a 1-1 result back in Round 3 in Gosford, while the last two encounters in New Zealand have also finished all-square.

Wellington Phoenix Form Analysis

It hasn't been a great start to the season for Wellington - they've registered a 2-2-4 record heading into this contest and are languishing down in 11th spot on the ladder.

Phoenix have conceded 14 goals in their eight games, with only the Jets leaking more.

Honestly, there's not many bright spots for Wellington right now. They've lost four of their last five games, with their only win in that period coming at home against Adelaide - but the Reds haven't won on the road in their last 13 outings.

Wellington really should have scored more goals against Newcastle last week, but they were wasteful in the final third. Ifeanyi Eze managed to find the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season, but the Nigerian striker needs support if the Nix are going to mount a finals push this term.

Central Coast Mariners Form Analysis

The Mariners have an identical 2-2-4 record for the season heading into this showdown and are one rung above Wellington on the ladder due to goal difference.

Central Coast enjoyed an encouraging start to the campaign, going unbeaten across three of their four games, earning wins over rivals Newcastle and against a resurgent Perth side on the road.

However, their form has tailed off over the last month, with the Mariners losing to the Wanderers, Sydney FC and Auckland, along with a 0-0 stalemate against Melbourne City.

The Mariners were no match for Auckland last week in Gosford, suffering a 2-1 defeat, only finding the back of the net due to an own goal from the Black Knights.

Verdict

Wellington and Central Coast are amongst the worst defensive teams in the competition, so both teams should find the back of the net.

Neither side is playing well right now, so a draw looks the value bet in the H2H market.
