The upcoming A-League Melbourne derby between Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory promises to be a key encounter at AAMI Park. With both teams vying for a spot in the finals, the outcome could be decisive. City sits in seventh, while Victory is sixth on the ladder. Recent matches have been low-scoring, suggesting a cautious approach. The recommended plays are a draw and under 2.5 goals. Charles Nduka of Victory is also tipped to continue his scoring form, making this encounter an exciting prospect.

Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory Tips & Prediction

It's shaping as another blockbuster Melbourne derby showdown on Saturday night as City and Victory collide at AAMI Park in A-League Round 18 action.

This could prove a pivotal clash in terms of who makes the finals come the end of the season, with Victory and City currently sitting in sixth and seventh spot on the ladder respectively. City have only played one A-League games this month due to Asian Champions League commitments, with Aurelio Vidmar's side becoming the first Australian side since 2020 to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition. Meanwhile, Victory missed a golden chance to further establish themselves in the top six after settling for a 1-1 draw against lowly Brisbane last week.

It's tough to split these two sides at the moment, so the draw can offer some value in the H2H market, with half of the last 10 derbies ending all square. Under 2.5 goals is a trend for City this season and derbies - especially when the teams are so close on the ladder - can prove cagey affairs. I'm also going to have a smaller stake on Charles Nduka to score in back-to-back games - the striker was impressive last week in opening the scoring against Brisbane and should get his chances again here.
  • City have seen Under 2.5 goals in 12 of their last 17 games in all comps
  • Victory have seen Under 2.5 goals in two of their last three games
  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of the last five meetings
  • Five of the last 10 meetings have ended in a draw after 90 mins
  • City have drawn three of their last four games
  • City have an equal-high seven draws in the A-League this season
  • Charles Nduka scored on his starting debut for Victory last week & had three shots

Melbourne City vs Melbourne Victory Head To Head

This will be the third derby of the season, with City prevailing 2-0 in Round 4 before Matt Grimaldi's 90th minute winner handed Victory a 1-0 triumph in Round 9.

Melbourne City Form Analysis

City come into this encounter with a 5-7-5 record for the season, languishing just outside the finals positions in seventh.

While City have been hugely impressive to qualify for the knockout phase of the Asian Champions League Elite, the reigning A-League champions have struggled domestically and need to pick things up to ensure they make the top six.

Aurelio Vidmar's side last A-League outing came at the start of the month when they were held to a 1-1 draw by the lowly Wanderers.

City have since finished off their league phase campaign in the Champions League, beating Ulsan Hyundai 2-1 before a mid-week 0-0 stalemate with Gangwon.

Melbourne Victory Form Analysis

Victory arrive at this clash with a 7-3-7 record on the season, clinging onto sixth spot on the ladder.

It's been a rollercoaster ride for Victory this season - they put together a nice four-game winning run over the festive period after a shocking start to the campaign, but they've since won just two of their last six.

Arthur Diles' side squandered a great chance to move up the ladder last week, blowing a one-goal lead to draw 1-1 with the out-of-form Brisbane Roar. Charles Nduka was lively up front, scoring his maiden goal in the A-League.

Diles will be hoping his team showcase some improvement for the derby.

“It’s another opponent, a totally different opponent, and a different match. Like we always say, form probably doesn’t count when there is a derby. It goes out the window,” Diles said.
“We will do everything we can to make sure we improve from tonight and do everything we need to on the training paddock so come Saturday night we are ready to go.”
