One of the oldest rivalries in Australian sports will continue on Friday night with two teams in solid form. The Roosters are coming off the back of a 40 pt second half effort against the Storm and have won 4 of their last 5 games while Souths have won 3 on the trot prior to their bye last weekend.

Souths took the matchup earlier this season and despite them showing form the past few weeks are not on the same trajectory as the Roosters at the moment. Sydney have taken the Sea Eagles, Dolphins, Bulldogs and Storm to the cleaners in recent weeks, putting their finals competitors on high alert with their dynamic brand of footy.

Over the past 5 games they rank 2nd in scoring, putting up 33.2 pts per game and are 1st in defence, allowing just 13.6 pts to opponents. They have a 7-4 record against current bottom 9 opponents and are 6-3 straight up as favourites in 2025.

Take Sydney to win 13+ even if the last 2 games have been tight, the average win margin when these teams play is 17+ pts. Take the Game Total Under with Souths not having enough to push this all the way over 52. Mark Nawaqanitawase is the league’s leading tryscorer, you have to pick him for a four pointer. Alex Johnston will likely cross but he needs 3 to break the record.

  • Sydney are the 2nd best attack and top ranked defence over the past 5 games. Despite winning 3 straight, the Rabbitohs are 10th in both categories.
  • The Game Total Under has hit in 4 of the last 6 matchups between these teams.
  • The Roosters have scored first in 14 of 23 games this season.
  • Mark Nawaqanitawase has scored 20 tries this season including 4 last week vs Melbourne.

Head to Head

South Sydney won the most recent matchup 20-14 back in April of this year breaking a 5 game regular season winning streak by the Roosters. Since 2019 these teams have met in 13 regular season games and 2 finals with Souths holding a slight 7-6 advantage in regular season matchups and finals split 1-1.

The Under has hit in 4 of the last 6 games and while the winning margin in the last 2 matchups has been under 10 points the average winning margin over the last 13 games is 17.5 pts.

Sydney Roosters Form Analysis

The Roosters made a statement last weekend piling on the points in their 40-10 victory over the Storm at AAMI Park. It was only the second loss for Melbourne on their home turf this season and also the second time that the Storm had allowed more than 31 pts to their opponent.

It was the Mark Nawaqanitawase show as the high-flying winger scored 4 tries (almost getting a 5th) on his charge up the tryscorer ladder to lead the league with 20 meat pies on the season.

Sydney uncharacteristically dominated both Possession and Territory in the matchup with their brilliant attack coming off the back of swarming defence, restricting their opponents to just 1066 Run Metres (Storm season low) and only 13 Tackles Inside 20m.

Sydney Roosters Team News

Sam Walker has recovered from his concussion and will take his place at half-back pushing Sandon Smith out of the side and Hugo Savala to five-eighth.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Form Analysis

Souths had the bye last weekend but prior to the week off they won their 3rd game in a row via a 40-0 beat down of the St George Dragons.

Despite their win streak, which snapped a 9 game losing streak, the team is still ranked 17th in Run Metres and Opposition Run Metres as well as 16th in Linebreaks and Opposition Linebreaks.

They have battled with injury to key players for the majority of the year which has definitely contributed to the win total. Their 3-10 record against top 8 teams this season is not likely to improve in this matchup.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Team News

Cameron Murray has defied the odds to make a comeback from his achilles injury from pre-season. Jack Wighton also returns to the lineup from suspension. Tallis Duncan reverts to the backrow with Wighton’s inclusion.

Cody Walker is still named on the bench while Tyrone Munro has grabbed the right winger position. Thomas Fletcher is out and Jacob Host moves to the interchange.
