In the upcoming NRL 2026 Round 2 clash between the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs, experts predict a victory for the Rabbitohs. The Roosters' shaky start and flat attack contrast sharply with the Rabbitohs' confident and dynamic play, particularly from their left-side attack including stars like Latrell Mitchell and Alex Johnston. With a strategic reshuffle and new signings like David Fifita, the Rabbitohs are in strong shape. They are expected not only to surpass their team total score but also to secure the win.

Sydney Roosters vs South Sydney Rabbitohs, Round 2 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Roosters poor form early in the year will bite them again when they come up against a South Sydney side full of confidence after a powerful performance in their opening match of the season.

It is early days but the Rabbits did look good last week, especially in the first half before taking their foot off the jugular of the Dolphins in the second. The well talked about left side did its job with the ball in hand with the combination of Latrell Mitchell, David Fifita and Alex Johnson uncontainable, while Campbell Graham also looked at his best again on the right alongside Jack Wighton.

“Felt good to be back out there with the boys, felt fit, coming off a pre-season,” said Campbell Graham.

The Roosters looked slow out of the blocks, as usual in Round 1, and their attack was flat and full of mistakes with the new halves pairing of Sam Walker and Cherry-Evans not quite there yet.

That is exactly why I am jumping on the Rabbits to snag this one. Souths’ defence wasn’t flash, however, they have too many points in them for the Roosters to hang with early in the season.

The left side will cause havoc again and Alex Johnston will get his record-tying and possibly breaking try, while there is a little better value in Campbell Graham on the other wing.

  • The Roosters lost their opening 3 home games last season.
  • South Sydney won 4 of their first 5 matches to open the 2025 season.
  • The Roosters conceded an average of 31.5 points in their opening 4 rounds last season.
  • Campbell Graham scored twice last week against the Dolphins.

Head to Head

The Roosters and Rabbits split the pot in 2025 with Souths getting up 20-14 in Round 5 and the Roosters responding in Round 27 with a 36-6 victory.

Easts have controlled this contest in recent years winning 6 of the last 8 matchups.

Sydney Roosters Form Analysis

The Roosters were filled with errors and indiscipline in their opening match against the Warriors, going down in New Zealand 42-18, amounting 11 errors and 11 conceded penalties.

It was a standard Sydney performance in Round 1, regularly dropping the first match of the season.

The back-five for the Roosters did a lot of the heavy lifting, tallying 5 of the top-six metres gained with Naufahu Whyte the only Roosters forwards to run for over 100 metres (161 RM).

Daley Cherry-Evans debut as a Rooster was flat, contributing just one line break assist and 116 kick metres.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Form Analysis

A 28-10 lead at halftime versus the Dolphins was just the start an under pressure Rabbits team needed, who came into this season with the expectation to turn things around in 2026 and play finals footy again.

The signing of David Fifita and a reshuffle in the backline with Latrell Mitchell moving to the centres and Jye Gray at the back certainly paid dividends in the opener for Souths with their left-side attack causing plenty of problems with Latrell crossing for a double and Johnston getting within 1 try of the all-time record.

The scary part about it is that the right side is also potent with everyone forgetting how much of a gun Campbell Graham is and the individual magic he sparks.

This could be a season where Souths’ previous defensive woes are forgotten by simply outsourcing their opponents.
