Dragons vs Raiders NRL Rd 22 Cheat Sheet

Canberra are flying on a nine-game winning streak at the top of the table and the Dragons are languishing in 12th on a four-game losing run. There should only be one winner, right? I'm not so sure...

Yes, the Raiders 1-12 bandwagon has gone off course the last fortnight, but they were playing the Knights and Eels at home - and in both games they were either losing or level at half-time. I still have heavy doubts over Canberra's ability to put away teams. Now, they go on the road, where they average just 20 points per game (compared to 34 at home). Meanwhile, the Dragons concede on average just 18 points in their home games (compared to 32 on the road).

My thinking here is that the Raiders' winning streak is going to come to an end sooner rather than later, so why not in the Gong on Saturday night? The last eight meetings between the teams have been decided by a 1-12 margin, so either team to win inside that bracket appeals, while the Dragons at $4.10 with Picklebet is tempting too. Corey Allen is solid value for a winger as Anytime Tryscorer and is backed to cross.

The Raiders have won the last five meetings between the teams, but they've all been close - including a most-recent 28-24 victory at GIO Stadium back in Round 18.

It's been another tough season for the Dragons, who come into this encounter almost certainly out of the finals race after losing nine of their last 12 games, including four on the trot and a last-start 38-32 loss to fellow battlers North Queensland.

St George Illawarra more often than not fight until the end - 10 of their 12 defeats have been by a 1-12 margin and three have been by a single point. If they'd won just a few of those games, the Dragons would be right in the finals picture.

However, the reality is the Dragons are down in 12th spot on the ladder and they lack that killer punch to close out games.

Much has also been made of Kyle Flanagan keeping his spot in the team under his father's tutelage when Lachlan Illias has been on fire in the NSW Cup, especially when the Dragons are in clear need of some direction and leadership in the halves.

Canberra Raiders Form Analysis

It's been a dream season for the Raiders, who are now just two wins away from equalling their club record of 11 consecutive wins, achieved in both the 1989 and 1994 seasons - and they made the Grand Final in both.

Canberra have only lost one game since Round 4 - and that was a defeat to the Bulldogs where they were leading 20-0 at half-time. The Green Machine don't usually blow teams off the park, but they work for one another and are incredible well-drilled and structured, with each player knowing their role under Ricky Stuart.

In contrast to the majority of their season, the Raiders have been able to kick on and register big wins in their last two outings against the Eels (40-16) and Knights (44-18) at home.
