Happy Valley Tips October 21

Racing Spirit Handicap Tips (Race 3)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 3 No. 6 Strange Alert

The combination of Jerry Chau and David Eustace has proved particularly profitable this season, producing five winners from just 12 runners and a return on investment exceeding 468%, with recent victories including Aromanish Gold at Happy Valley last Wednesday and outsider Shannon Glow at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The pair reunite with Strange Alert, a lightly raced five-year-old returning from a lengthy absence, and while that layoff raises some concerns, his progression through three barrier trials suggests considerable work has gone into preparing him for Wednesday's 1650m assignment.

After making little impression in 1200m trials during August and September, the gelding showed much more in his latest 1700m hit-out at Happy Valley, producing a more prominent performance that suggested he was approaching race fitness.

There was plenty to like about his four appearances across two previous campaigns, particularly his runner-up finish when resuming last October in a race that produced eight subsequent winners, while interference proved costly in other outings before he finished within three lengths of the winner over 1400m at Sha Tin.

Strange Alert has demonstrated ability beyond what his limited record might suggest, and although returning from such a lengthy spell presents an obvious risk, his previous ratings and untapped potential make him a contender, while stablemate Lucky My Way is another worth considering at longer odds despite some unconvincing trials.

Swifty Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 4 No. 4 Virtus Glory

Nichola Yuen and Ricky Yiu have formed another profitable partnership this season, combining for four winners at a strike rate approaching 17% and a return on investment of almost 44%, with the pair completing a double at Happy Valley last Wednesday.

The 3kg claiming apprentice reunites with Virtus Glory after partnering the gelding twice during his first preparation, including an unlucky third on June 7 when he was badly held up before finishing strongly behind Leading Dragon in a performance that suggested he could easily have finished closer.

Fortune was again against the son of Written By when resuming on September 6, with a three-wide passage throughout making his half-length second particularly meritorious, before he found only the heavily supported E Ho Ho too strong at his latest appearance, finishing three-quarters of a length behind the winner.

Although he appeared to have every opportunity last time, Virtus Glory should benefit from his recent racing, particularly given his strongest performance during his initial campaign came third-up, and the lightly raced four-year-old still has scope to improve on the ratings he has produced.

Barrier 11 presents a challenge, but there is an opportunity for Yuen to work forward and potentially find the lead, and if Virtus Glory can control the tempo, further improvement would make him difficult to catch.

The Longines Cup Tips (Race 6)

Happy Valley Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 8 Love Together

A competitive field has assembled for Wednesday night's Longines Cup, but Love Together has produced a string of performances suggesting he can measure up to Class 2 company for the first time, with the progressive four-year-old appearing capable of further improvement this season.

He was unfortunate not to record his fourth career victory when resuming over the Happy Valley 1000m on September 16, suffering a squeeze shortly after the start and being forced back before finishing powerfully under 61kg to finish within half a length of the winner.

That form has been strengthened by two subsequent winners emerging from the contest, while Love Together has since returned to the trials and moved well in an October 12 hit-out, settling closer to the speed and suggesting he has taken improvement from his first-up appearance.

A more economical passage looks achievable from barrier four, particularly given the gelding demonstrated his effectiveness with a favourable run when winning over the same course and distance earlier this year, before completing that campaign with a Class 3 victory at Sha Tin despite carrying a substantial weight.

Dropping to just 52kg for Wednesday's feature is a significant advantage, and with his proven turn-of-foot, favourable draw and strong second-up prospects, Love Together is a big chance in the Longines Cup.

Swifty Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Golden Ace

Caspar Fownes has been a trainer worth following at Happy Valley this season, recording seven winners and six placegetters from 36 starters for an impressive 177.5% return on investment, and he has several opportunities to improve that record across Wednesday night's program.

Golden Ace is among his more interesting representatives, having shown considerable promise on debut at Sha Tin on July 1 when overcoming interference at the start, racing greenly towards the rear and encountering further trouble near the 200m before finishing strongly into third.

The son of Ace High resumed over 1000m at Happy Valley on October 7 and was given a difficult task after settling well back from a wide barrier, but he produced encouraging late work to finish midfield, beaten just one-and-a-half lengths.

His pedigree suggests he should eventually appreciate much longer distances, particularly being out of a Pentire mare, although the four-year-old has displayed a surprisingly sharp turn-of-foot over sprint trips and Wednesday's rise to 1200m should bring him further into contention.

Barrier nine means Brenton Avdulla will require some luck in transit, but Golden Ace remains lightly raced and open to considerable improvement, and in a Class 4 contest that lacks outstanding depth, he looks capable of delivering a competitive performance at an each-way quote.

Songs Of Victory Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 9 No. 9 Embraces

Although his overall winning strike rate is modest, Embraces has been a consistent performer around Happy Valley, with two victories over Wednesday's course and distance highlighting his suitability for this Class 3 assignment.

The son of Reliable Man last saluted over the same 1650m course in this grade when carrying 58.5kg and winning by half a length, but a subsequent drop in the ratings now leaves him with a considerably lighter impost of 54.5kg after Jerry Chau's allowance.

There was plenty of merit in his September 16 return, when he was taken back and badly held up in the straight before finishing sixth, and that performance provides an important form reference through Pope Cody, who heads Wednesday's market but now meets Embraces on significantly less favourable weight terms.

His October 9 trial over 1700m at Happy Valley provided further encouragement, with the gelding leading before being eased late and then moving strongly beyond the line, while his previous campaign also featured consecutive thirds in May and a narrow defeat at Sha Tin on July 1 after covering ground throughout.

Drawn ideally in barrier two, Embraces should enjoy a more economical passage under Chau, and with the benefit of that first-up effort, an attractive weight and proven course-and-distance form, he looks a strong each-way contender in the finale.
