There have been no public trials leading into this resumption, but as a 1000m specialist, Kay Tee Why has always come to hand early in his preparations.

The lightly raced galloper looks the one to beat here fresh under William Pike, with a profile that suits these sharp five-furlong sprints.

A runner capable of producing a strong finish over this trip, he has never finished outside of the placings at 1000m, with his only misses coming in two 1200m runs prior to a spell.

The wide draw is a positive given his racing pattern, allowing him to balance up and launch late where he is most effective.

The son of Nicconi still has upside at just his 11th career start, boasting three wins and a narrow defeat from four attempts over this track-and-trip.

Mrs Mac's Handicap Tips (Race 5)


Ascot Favourite - Race 5 No. 5 Ladies Pro

Ladies Pro is likely to go around a short-priced favourite in the fifth, finding a modest assignment against her own age to kick off her second campaign.

The three-year-old arrives off a sharp trial win at Lark Hill on March 23, suggesting she has returned in good order.

The Williams-trained filly made an impression with a slick debut victory before a narrow defeat when stepping straight into Class 3 company.

Her first campaign ended with an honest fourth-of-13 finish in a fast-run WA Guineas when stretched out to a mile.

She can settle handy enough under Pike from barrier two, and the 1200m looks an ideal starting point for this preparation.

Ascot Value Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Pond Master

A March 9 trial was solid, if workmanlike, finishing second in a 950m heat won by the handy Cessation.

Pond Master resumed on March 21 over this track, trip and grade and was unable to secure clear running in the home straight when finishing fourth-of-nine.

That race has already produced two subsequent winners, adding strength to the form around his return effort.

His fresh record isn’t flash; however, the gelding has not missed the placings in three second-up runs.

A versatile type effective from 1200m through to a mile, he was a Saturday three-year-old winner at Ascot last season and comes through a consistent preparation that included two wins and three placings from his first five runs before a solid effort at Listed level.

Schweppes - WATC Derby Tips (Race 9)


Ascot Feature Bet - Race 9 No. 3 Wynn Las Vegas

There is no knock on the two favourites, Sentimental Legend and Wonderfully Mae, who dominate the market as the WA Oaks winner and Melvista Stakes victor respectively.

At longer odds, Wynn Las Vegas could be the Derby blowout option, although this may come a little too soon for a youngster still learning the caper.

After breaking through impressively second up as a short-priced favourite, he went on to contest the Melvista Stakes on April 1.

Given he never settled up front, there was merit in sticking on for third-of-seven in that key lead-up.

The blinkers come off and winkers go on here as a softer option, with the aim of helping him travel more kindly over the staying trip, and with any improvement off that 2200m run, he can give this a shake at a big price.
