Australia Women aim to defend their World Cup crown against New Zealand in the tournament opener. Historically dominant, Australia have beaten New Zealand in 9 of their last 10 encounters and boast seven World Cup titles. New Zealand, coming off eight losses from their last 11 ODIs, face an uphill battle. Australia, despite losing their warmup to England, are expected to start strong; Beth Mooney is in top form with recent scores of 138 and 59. Key action point: Watch for another commanding Australian performance and standout batting from Mooney.

Australia vs New Zealand Women Preview & Tips

Australia Women are looking to begin the defence of the World Cup crown they secured in 2022 by beating the hosts of the last World Cup in their opener.

New Zealand know they have to be perfect to have a chance of winning the World Cup this year, but things could not start against a stronger opponent as they take on the Aussies in game one.

  • Australia Women have won seven of the 12 ODI World Cups
  • New Zealand have lost eight of their last 11 ODI's
  • Beth Mooney scored 138 and 59 in her last two outings

Head To Head

Australia have dominated recent contests between the pair, with the Aussies winning nine of their last 10 matches against New Zealand. The latter have a sole win in this time.

Australia Women Form

Australia Women arrive for the 2025 World Cup needing to bounce back from a frustrating four wicket loss to England in their final World Cup warm up match. While this match means nothing, it will still have irked them to lose their final warm up game to a rival for the trophy.

Against New Zealand, a strong start is vital. Whether they are batting or bowling first, the Aussies will want to lay down a marker. Strong wins by 141 runs, 65 runs and 75 runs in their last three against New Zealand shows the margin of quality between the pair is large, and the world champions will be chasing another big win in game one.

One player that has really impressed heading into the tournament is Beth Mooney. Scores of 138 and 59 in her last two ODI outings shows she is in great touch with the bat, and I back her to shine in game one.

New Zealand Women Form

There are far more winnable games to come for New Zealand Women, with their clash against the pre-tournament favourites a nightmare way to start their campaign.

Of course, there are four semi-final spots up for grabs along with matches against sides that are weaker than New Zealand to come. However, this does not mean they can afford a hammering in game one, with their performance in likely defeat very important.

With nine defeats in their last 10 against Australia, the focus in this one needs to be on closing the gap between the sides. Losing in a big way in game one would be a worrying way to start, but I do not see them competing with their opponents.

Verdict

I am backing Beth Mooney to continue her fine run of form with the bat as she notches over 33.5 runs in another dominant display against New Zealand.
