Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers Big Bash League Expert Tips

Perth will scorch past the Heat in what shapes as a high-scoring shootout at the Gabba in BBL action on Friday night.

The Scorchers arrive with early-season momentum after their win over Sydney Sixers in an overs-reduced match last Sunday and some growing confidence that their new-look group can again handle the pressure in the key moments.

But Brisbane are not to be underestimated at home, where batting is traditionally their greatest weapon. Colin Munro remains the tone-setter at the top, striking at well over 150 at the Gabba, Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson give the Heat multiple ways to build and finish an innings.

If Brisbane win the powerplay, they are capable of posting match-winning totals quickly, particularly with the short straight boundaries in play.

But the Heat will need to tighten up with the ball after conceding 212 in their 14-run loss to the Melbourne Renegades in their opener.

On a GABBA surface that consistently rewards intent, they will need to be on the ball against Perth, who look well balanced with bat in hand. Finn Allen provides volatility up top, but the real difference-maker is Cooper Connolly, whose ability to absorb pressure and then accelerate through the middle overs allows Perth to keep wickets in hand. He was the match-winner for Perth against the Sixers.

With Mitch Marsh expected to spend more time at the crease as the tournament progresses and Aaron Hardie offering flexibility, the Scorchers are well equipped to chase big totals at the Gabba without panicking.

Take the Scorchers to win with Cooper Connolly amongst the runs again. Colin Munro is Brisbane’s biggest threat in the powerplay.

  • Perth have won nine of the last 10 between the two sides
  • Cooper Connolly 20+ runs – Connolly has passed 20 in five of his last seven BBL innings and struck 59 at nearly 190 strike rate in Round 1
  • Colin Munro 30+ runs – Munro has cleared 30 in four of his last six BBL innings at the Gabba
  • Both Teams to score 150+ runs – seven of the last nine Heat–Scorchers matches at the Gabba have seen both sides reach this mark, with average first-innings totals above 175

Head to Head Stats

Perth Scorchers hold a clear historical advantage in this rivalry, winning 16 of the 24 completed Big Bash League matches between the sides. Brisbane’s eight victories have largely come at home, where conditions allow their batting depth to apply sustained pressure.

When Perth win this matchup, they tend to do so with stronger batting outputs, averaging over 160 runs in victories compared to Brisbane’s low-150s average when successful. Matches between these sides at the Gabba have generally been high scoring, with first-innings totals regularly pushing beyond 170.

Brisbane Heat Form

Brisbane’s season opener against the Renegades highlighted both their upside and volatility. Conceding 212 exposed issues with control at the death, where they leaked heavily under pressure. Shaheen Afridi endured a difficult debut, but there were positives elsewhere in the attack, with Xavier Bartlett once again bowling with discipline and Jack Wildermuth continuing his knack for striking in the middle overs.

With the bat, Brisbane showed why they remain dangerous. Colin Munro’s 55 off 32 balls set the tone early, while Jimmy Peirson’s late 50 off 22 underlined the depth that allows the Heat to keep scoring even after losing wickets. Brisbane struck at over 160 through the middle overs in that match, a pattern that suits Gabba conditions perfectly.

If Brisbane can tighten their bowling execution, particularly at the death, their batting is more than capable of putting Perth under pressure.

Perth Scorchers Form

Perth opened their campaign with a controlled, professional performance against the Sydney Sixers in a rain-affected match. While conditions were unusual, the traits on display were familiar. Cooper Connolly anchored the chase with 59 off 31 balls, striking at nearly 190 and ensuring the required rate never spiralled.

The bowling unit was the standout. Brody Couch impressed on debut, taking 2-12 including the key wicket of Babar Azam, while Perth conceded fewer than 8.5 runs per over overall. Despite missing some established names, the Scorchers looked settled, disciplined and adaptable.

With Mitch Marsh expected to feature prominently as the season progresses and Finn Allen providing volatility at the top, Perth’s batting profile looks capable of matching Brisbane’s scoring while offering greater stability through the middle overs.

BBL|14 Perth Scorchers Away Stats

Perth were one of the competition’s strongest travelling sides last season, winning four of seven away matches. They ranked inside the top three for away-game bowling economy and conceded fewer than 165 runs in five of those fixtures.

When chasing away from home, the Scorchers consistently showed composure, completing successful chases under 180 in an average of just over 15 overs. That ability to control tempo away from Optus Stadium remains one of their biggest strengths.
