Key players like Isaac Heeney and Brodie Grundy are expected to be influential, with Heeney aiming to score 2+ goals. Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants, Round 6 2026 - Expert Prediction

Sydney will tighten their grip on top spot and put a serious dent in GWS’s season with a statement Sydney Derby win that looks set to cover the 24.5-point line.

The Swanssit on top of the ladder at 4-1 and have looked sharp, fit and connected across the opening five rounds, while this is a massive proving-ground match for the 2-3 Giants, who need to show they can match it with the competition’s benchmark sides after an inconsistent month.

They come off a confidence boosting 56-point win over Richmond but face a Sydney side that will bring a much superior pressure game, which will force negate the Giants transition game.

Brodie Grundy shapes as a key influence in the middle, while Isaac Heeney is one of the hardest match-ups in the game right now and comes in with some serious form in recent weeks.

Up forward, the Swans have multiple ways to score against a Giants defence that are still without Sam Taylor, while the return of Aaron Cadman was short lived with the former No.1 draft pick suffering a concussion in his return last week.

Take Sydney to cover the 24.5-point line, the over in total points, and Isaac Heeney for 2+ goals.

  • Sydney have won five of their past six matches against GWS.
  • Isaac Heeney has kicked 10 goals this season, hitting the 2+ in every match he has played.
  • The Swans top the AFL ladder with four wins from five matches and a percentage of 175.5.
  • More injury concerns for the Giants.

Head to Head Stats

GWS were 44-point winners the last time the two sides played, overcoming a 28-point half-time deficit to kick 12 goals to one after the main break. Aaron Cadman and Jake Stringer kicked three goals apiece, while Lachie Whitfield had 27 disposals.

But the Swans were 14-point winners at the SCG earlier in the year and had won five in a row before the slip-up late last year, including the past three at the SCG. Stringer has kicked 3+ goals in three of his past four against the Swans, while Cadman has kicked 2+ in his past four. Errol Gulden and Tom Green have been major ball-winners in recent meetings, but are sidelined by injury and will be sorely missed by their respective sides.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

Sydney sit on top of the ladder with a 4-1 win-loss record after their 32-point win over the Gold Coast Suns in Gather Round. They have registered some big winning margins so far and sit with a healthy percentage of 175.5, averaging 116 points per game.

Isaac Heeney starred against the Suns with 33 disposals and two goals, following on from his four-goal haul the week prior in the Swans’ 128-point win over the West Coast Eagles. Justin McInerney had 27 disposals against the Suns and has averaged 26 this season, the highest of any Swan.

Brodie Grundy has also been another key player with some solid form in the ruck, while the Swans’ relentless pressure has limited opposition sides. They led the tackle count 96-52 last weekend in the 14.16 to 9.14 scoreline.

James Jordon’s tagging work is also becoming a major feature of Sydney’s system. After limiting Noah Anderson’s influence last weekend, expect him to go to Finn Callaghan at stages, particularly at stoppage and around centre bounce, where GWS generated so much of its early dominance against Richmond. If that role works, it will further feed Sydney’s ability to win territory and lock the ball in its front half.

The Swans are also scoring in a more layered way than they did at times last season. Papley’s return has added genuine crumbing pressure and scoreboard impact, while Chad Warner and McInerney continue to push forward from midfield. That spread of contributors means opposition sides can no longer simply load up on one or two threats, and it gives Sydney multiple ways to get this game over the total.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

The Giants picked up a much-needed win in Gather Round against a disappointing Richmond outfit, blowing the Tigers away with an 8.2 to 2.2 first term before eventually winning by 56.

That snapped a run of three straight losses and it was led by a midfield group that ran riot, including Finn Callaghan (37 disposals), while Aaron Cadman (four goals) and Brent Daniels (three) fired up forward.

Callaghan has had 30+ in his past three, while Lachie Ash and Clayton Oliver have had 30+ in three of their past four. The 131 points the Giants registered was their best score of the year, but it will be interesting to see if they can get anywhere near that against a Swans outfit that will bring a much higher level of pressure. In the three matches prior to the Tigers win, they averaged just 61 points per game.

The Giants’ ball movement did look closer to the “Orange Tsunami” against Richmond, particularly with their corridor chains and overlap run, but they still overused the ball at times. That is the major tactical concern heading into this matchup because Sydney’s pressure and team defence are far less forgiving than Richmond’s.

The loss of Aaron Cadman and Stephen Coniglio is significant. Cadman gave them a genuine aerial target and helped take heat off Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer, while Coniglio’s experience around stoppage would have been important against Sydney’s deeper midfield mix. Without that pair, more responsibility falls on Finn Callaghan, Lachie Ash and Clayton Oliver to generate territory.

Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Team List & News

Sydney Swans Team News

Callum Mills copped a knee to the back last weekend but was able to play out the game. Angus Sheldrick will be available to return from suspension, but the Swans are unlikely to make too many changes to their starting 23.

Tom Papley looks back to full fitness and his form around goal adds another dangerous layer to the Swans’ forward pressure.

GWS Giants Team News

Aaron Cadman and Brent Daniels were key inclusions last week when returning from injury and had an immediate impact. Cadman, however, will be back on the sidelines, as will Stephen Coniglio, with that pair picking up concussions.

Brent Daniels and Toby Bedford’s return did help restore some pressure and speed inside 50, but the Giants now lose Cadman’s structural presence ahead of the ball. The Giants also face the challenge of the five-day turnaround, which only adds to the difficulty of facing the ladder leaders away from home.
