GWS didn’t manage the conditions as well as the Hawks in Tasmania and took their first loss of the season, however 4 goals from Jesse Hogan in blistering winds has Giants fans already thinking about another Coleman Medal.

West Coast have had a poor start to the year and now with the loss of key defender Jeremy McGovern, it is hard to see any real improvement on the horizon. The Giants will be eager to put up a barrage of points in front of their home fans to make up for the tough loss to Hawthorn last week and the Eagles will feel the wrath.

The team total of 117.5 is a big one, but certainly not out of reach if you consider that the Eagles gave up an average of 118 points when playing on the road in 2024. With Jesse Hogan hitting his stride straight away in tough conditions, expect a very active performance from the key forward, who will be keen to make up for the two matches he missed.

  • West Coast are averaging 23 less possessions than any other team in the AFL.
  • GWS kicked 138 points against West Coast last time they met at ENGIE Stadium.
  • West Coast concede an average of 112 points per game in 2025.
  • Jesse Hogan had 4 goals in his first match of 2025.

Head to Head

GWS won the only meeting against West Coast last season, getting up 108-43 at Optus Stadium.

The Giants have won 3 of the last 4 matches since the 2021 season.

GWS have been impressive in their first three rounds of footy in 2025, however, they couldn’t stop the freight train that is the Hawthorn Hawks last weekend, going down 76-64 in tricky, windy conditions at UTAS Stadium.

A 37-2 lead at the first break with the wind in their backs was pretty much the mark with the gustly breeze wreaking havoc, the Hawks countered with a 46-39 lead at the main break before GWS were official broken in the third where Hawthorn won the quarter with the wind in their face.

The environment was brutal and you cannot take anything negative away from the Giants performance. The major positive from the loss was the return of the 2024 Coleman medalist Jesse Hogan who picked up where he left off last season, kicking 4 goals despite the brutal conditions.

GWS are as healthy as can be and will be able to pick from form with plenty of big performers in the VFL last week with Jake Riccardi (22 disposals, one goal) and Max Gruzewski (14 disposals, four goals) pushing for selection.

An 0-3 start for West Coast was certainly not unexpected, but in a sense there is a feeling of underachievement for the group that had shown signs of improvement in patches last season.

Their performance against Brisbane two weeks ago, before their 38-point loss to Freo last week, was the side that many expected would be more present in 2025, getting out to an early 31-point lead before throwing it all in the trash in the second half.

The form of the 2024 No. 1 draft pick Harley Reid has been scrutinized heavily, but pointing the finger at one player is not the way to go. West Coast, to put it simply, can’t keep their hands on the ball, averaging 294.7 possessions, 23 less than the next least Richmond.
