Who would have thought we would be previewing a top of the table clash between two undefeated teams in Gold Coast and Adelaide 4 weeks into the season!! But that is the reality as both teams have gotten off to a flier to start 2025.
The Suns have started 3-0 only once in their short history, back in 2016. They then proceeded to lose 10 straight games before chalking up another victory, but this team is different. Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Touk Miller are just some of the names of players that are already putting up career numbers and look impossible to stop.
The Crows are also impressive with Izak Rankine, Rory Laird and veteran Tex Walker all contributing to a complete team effort over their first 3 wins of the season. Adelaide have been ruthless in their scoring with their opposition unable to restrict their ball movement as they rank 2nd in metres gained to start the year.
There is only 1 team better and it is the Suns, given they have played one less game but the resounding victory over the Demons at the G last weekend is not to be taken lightly. My expectation in this game is that Adelaide will try their best to move the ball by foot while the Suns by hand, creating some dynamic matchups and back and forth footy.
There will be momentum shifts in the game and it will come down to who can keep the pressure on the longest, who can win the ball out of the middle and put their team on the front foot. That team for me is Gold Coast.
Take the Suns to win with a 1-39 margin, also to go Over their team total and Matt Rowell to rack up 30 touches once again.
- Gold Coast won 7 of 9 at People First Stadium last year with 6 of those wins being 1-39.
- Adelaide won just 3 of 11 games away from home last season and have not beaten the Suns at home since 2019.
- Gold Coast have scored 120+ in their first two games, the Crows allowed 100 to the Bombers two weeks ago.
- Matt Rowell is averaging 33 disposals at 70% efficiency so far this season.
Head to Head
It’s a dead heat 4-4 in the head to head record between Gold Coast and Adelaide since the beginning of the 2019 season. The Suns have though won 3 of the last 4 matchups with all three wins as the home team.
The Under has hit in the last two games played but was only 1-5 in the 6 games prior. The winning margin has been between 1-39 points in 4 of the last 5 matchups.

The Suns have completely turned their road form around this year having won 2 straight to start the season after taking 10 games last season to get their first win as the away team.
Their 120-62 demolition of the Demons last weekend at the MCG was highlighted by Matt Rowell’s career best numbers of 36 disposals, 19 contested possessions, 13 clearances, 8 Inside 50’s and 7 tackles. Noah Anderson continues to stake his claim as a Brownlow smokey with 35 touches on the day with the Suns dominating the middle against an All-Australian opposition team.
Gold Coast won the clearance battle 40-24 despite being on the tail end of the hitouts 29-35. They also had more turnovers than their opponent but the skill and pressure on defence negated the advantage to the Demons. The Suns lead the league in Inside 50’s with an average of 66 per game so far this season.

Ben Ainsworth will need to pass a fitness test but is likely to be available for selection. With Adelaide sporting a very tall forward line, there will be some tough decisions for coach Hardwick this week.

The Crows have been the surprise packet of the AFL so far this season winning all three of their games convincingly to kick off the year. Their 161-100 win over Essendon two weeks ago was the best of the three but a 114-78 drubbing of a much improved North Melbourne last weekend is also impressive.
Adelaide have been super accurate in front of the sticks across their three games, hitting at a 60% rate, the 2nd best number in the AFL. They kicked 17 goals from 29 scoring shots last week against the Kangaroos with a 58.2% efficiency rate Inside 50. They are ranked 3rd in the league in average number of forward entries behind only Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Veteran Tex Walker kicked 4 goals last weekend with Riley Thilthorpe adding 3 to his already growing tally bringing him up to 9 goals for the year, equal 3rd in the league. Rory Laird and Izak Rankine both hit 30+ disposals in the game with Rankine adding 8 clearances to the stats sheet.
