Geelong Cats vs Gold Coast Suns Round 13 AFL Tips - Suns to continue winless streak at Cattery

In the upcoming AFL Round 13 match, the Geelong Cats are predicted to maintain their strong form at home against the Gold Coast Suns, who have yet to win at GMHBA Stadium. Key tactics include Geelong exploiting their tackling strength which previously troubled the Suns against Fremantle. While a Suns victory would be an upset, the Cats’ performance metrics suggest they will prevail. Betting trends favor Geelong covering at home in a high-scoring game, with Oliver Dempsey likely achieving multiple goals. Patrick Dangerfield’s return could further solidify the Cats’ midfield and forward line.

Both of these teams will feature in September and there is every chance the Suns can surprise everyone and come out the other side of this game with a win. The smart option though is to follow the overwhelming evidence in stats and trends and back the Cats at home with favourites winning at a 71% clip in the AFL this season.

One of the biggest insights from last weekend was the forward pressure that the Dockers heaped on the Suns causing them to falter. Geelong are the best team in the league in Tackles and Tackles Inside 50 which will again put a load of pressure on the Suns backmen to be perfect with their skills, which has proven to be difficult.

Bailey Smith is currently the Brownlow favourite and with Patrick Dangerfield likely to come back into the team the Geelong midfield and forward line are well equipped to force the Suns to choose between attack or defence which again will disrupt their flow.

The Cats will still need to perform better around stoppages but if they can improve, even temporarily then they are likely to overcome a galant Suns on Saturday.

Take Geelong to cover at home in a contest that is likely to go Over the Game Total. There is no value on Smith to reach 30 disposals but the number for Oliver Dempsey to kick multiple goals is good so get behind it!

  • The Suns have never won at GMHBA Stadium.
  • The Cats are the top ranked team in Tackles Inside 50m, tackling pressure severely affected the Suns last weekend against Fremantle.
  • 75% of both team’s games have been 1-39 win margins.
  • Oliver Dempsey has kicked multiple goals in 8 of 12 games this season.

Head to Head

The Suns have won two straight against the Cats but have been unable to win in 7 starts at GMHBA Stadium since they were admitted to the AFL. In the 6 games since the beginning of the 2019 season Geelong hold a 4-2 advantage straight up but it is the Suns that hold a 4-2 record ATS.

The Game Total is evenly split 3-3 to the Under/Over in the 6 game span while 4 of 6 have finished with a 1-39 pt win margin.

The Cats have won 3 in a row and have scored in triple digits in 4 straight games heading into this weekend. Most recent was a 43 point win over the West Coast Eagles which was expected but the previous win over the Bulldogs would have filled them with loads of confidence.

They have won 3 of 4 games at home this season and lead or are near the top in a bunch of metrics including Marks Inside 50, Points from Stoppages, Points from Turnovers, Goal Accuracy and Tackles.

Geelong are a team that like to kick the ball rather than handball and it has been effective for them in moving around the park to exploit opposition weaknesses.

Gold Coast’s three game win streak was snapped last weekend as they suffered their third loss of the season and first at home for 2025. The 75-64 loss to Fremantle was underpinned by wet conditions that made it difficult to control the ball.

The Suns were stifled in their backline with their opponent laying 11 tackles Inside 50 in just the first quarter. They fought back from a game high 20 point deficit to even hit the front in the third but were unable to stop the onslaught.

In all three losses the Suns have incurred this season they have scored less than 80 pts, a stark contrast to the 111 pt average for the games in which they have emerged victorious.
