GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide Power Round 13 AFL Tips - Port Powerless vs Giants

In the upcoming AFL Round 13 match, the GWS Giants face Port Adelaide Power. Though the Giants experienced a shaky win against Richmond, their opponents, Port Adelaide, have lost four consecutive matches and seem vulnerable. Historically dominant at home, GWS seeks to capitalize, with Lachie Ash playing key roles. Port’s poor defensive record could aid GWS’s advantage. With GWS having won four of their last five matches at Manuka Oval, they’re likely to continue their success, while Port struggles remain evident.

GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide Power, Round 13 2025 - Expert Prediction

There is absolutely nothing that says Port will be any shot at winning this game - but why do I feel so uneasy about backing the Giants in this spot?

GWS snuck away with a 3 pt win against Richmond last weekend and for much of the match it looked like they were going to lose. It is the mid-season form slump we have come to know of the Giants and history says they pull out of it a bit further into June than where we are now. Their efficiency has taken a hit and they have been slow out the gates.

But what are even Port? They have lost 4 in a row with margins of 90 (vs Dogs), 5 (vs Crows), 76 (vs Cats) and 49 (vs Dockers). They average just 62 pts per game over their last 5 and look lost at sea against quality football teams. Their defence around stoppages is paltry and they are one of the worst teams at taking care of the footy and making good use of it in their forward 50.

But still - uneasy. It might be because I have been burnt by Port in this type of situation before and I am hesitant to fully back GWS until their form slump has been blown off the park. We do need to take off the blinkers sometimes though and see things for what they really are. Port are in a bad way at the moment, it should be a walk in the park for the Giants.

Take GWS to win and cover the line as favourites at home in Canberra where they have won 4 of their last 5. The Port Team Total Under is in play with a strong GWS backline. Lachie Ash is averaging 28.7 disposals per game and has had four 30+ games this season.

  • The Giants have won 4 of their last 5 games at Manuka Oval.
  • GWS are 1st in Rebound 50’s and 6th in Goals per Inside 50, Port’s Defence is ranked 15th in both measures.
  • Port Adelaide averaged just 62 pts over their last 5 games and now come up against the team that restricts their opposition to fewest Goals per Inside 50 and the worst Goal Accuracy.
  • Lachie Ash is averaging 28.7 disposals per game and Port Adelaide allow the 4th most Rebound 50’s with Ash likely to capitalise on that.

Head to Head

Port Adelaide hold a 4-2 advantage in regular season matchups against GWS since the beginning of the 2019 season. The Giants have tasted success most recently though winning the lone matchup of 2024 with a 73-51 scoreline. They have also won the single finals match played between these teams during the same span 93-70 in 2023.

The Game Total has gone Under in 4 of 6 regular season games with the Winning Margin staying between 1-39 also in 4 of 6. Port hold a 4-2 ATS record covering as the favourite in all 4 wins.

The Giants got away with a scrappy win against Richmond last weekend leaving it until the 4th quarter to put their foot down and take the lead and the victory in the process. GWS allowed their opponent to dominate the scoreboard for the majority of the match but booted 5 unanswered goals in the final term for the win.

The usual suspects were all in effect for the Giants with Lachie Ash having a game high 36 disposals, while Tom Green had 30 to go with 6 clearances. Green applied the pressure defensively with 7 tackles as did Toby Bedford who finished the day with 8 tackles.

The Giants hit their season averages across most statlines but were extremely poor in Efficiency Inside 50 where they reached just 34% for this matchup compared to 51.2% on the season.

Port had the bye last weekend which followed an embarrassing 100-51 loss to the Dockers. The Power had ascendancy early but could not put any space between themselves and the Dockers with their efficiency and accuracy in front of goals hampering their chances.

Their second half was just plain poor for the third time in the month they kicked just 2 goals after the main break and allowed their opponent to run away with the game. Against the Cats it was 12.10, the Bulldogs scored 12.8 and then Freo put 9.4 past them in the last two quarters of footy.

Port Adelaide have major issues up front but their application to the craft, especially when things get tough is plain to see for anybody and something that the club will need to address with a new coach incoming next season.

Port could be boosted by the return of a number of players. Kane Farrell and Josh Sinn are both available for selection while Darcy Byrne-Jones will need to clear concussion protocols following a tough hit in the Dockers game 2 weeks ago. Esava Ratugolea could also come into contention if he passes a fitness test.
