The Dockers have had just the 1 finals appearance in the last 9 years while Gold Coast enter their first ever campaign. There are still a number of players for the Dockers with finals experience, 22 of them in fact with Nat Fyfe and Shai Bolton two of the older statesmen.

For the Suns though, only 3 players have played finals and as is normally the case in professional sports, a team has to take their licks. It will be an overwhelming occasion for Gold Coast having to travel to Perth and face a Dockers team hellbent on proving their worth to the league.

While I believe coach Damian Hardwick will have his players as ready as they can be, we saw cracks in preparation at times this season which provides a narrative of this game being a steep learning curve for a team that is destined to be in the finals race for years to come.

This game will come down to how good each team is at containing the strong forwards, the Dockers have the taller defensive unit. The midfield and ruck will also be important and while Jarrod Witts is as underrated as they come, the duo of Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson will definitely put him to the test both in the air and on the ground.

Take the Dockers to win 1-39 as has been the trend between these two sides since 2019. The Game Total to go Under following trends with this matchup and in the first week of AFL finals. Noah Anderson to get 30+ and Luke Ryan to get 20+.

  • All 7 games played between these teams since 2019 have finished with 1-39 margins. The Suns have not beaten Freo in Perth since 2016.
  • The majority of games in Week 1 of Finals since 2019 have gone Under the Game Total. 6 of the last 7 between these teams have also gone Under.
  • Noah Anderson had 39 disposals in this matchup back in Round 12 and is averaging 30.2 on the season.
  • Luke Ryan had 18 disposals in the previous matchup and will have his hands full with Gold Coast having the highest rate of Inside 50’s.

Head to Head

Freo have won 3 straight against the Suns including a 75-64 victory on the Gold Coast back in May of this season.

Since 2019 the ledger stands at 4-3 to the Dockers with all but one of those matchups staying Under the Game Total. The Winning Margin has been 1-39 in all 7 games.

Freo put a nervous first quarter against the Dogs behind them in the final regular season game of the season, busting out of the blocks late in the 2nd term to take control of the game.

They ended up winning 112-97 and despite a late comeback effort from the Dogs looked like they were in the box seat for the majority of the game. Pat Voss, Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy all kicked 3 goals while Caleb Serong did his work in the middle with a team high 24 disposals and 7 clearances.

The win capped a stunning season for the Dockers and put other finals teams on alert with just how deadly their attack can be when they get momentum rolling.

The Suns won their final game of the regular season against Essendon 153-58 to secure their first ever finals berth in an historic moment for the expansion club.

With the competition so tight this season they needed 15 wins to earn their spot, a win total that would have had them top 4 in 2 of the past 4 seasons. Ben King has been a dominant force up top all season long, he averaged 3 goals a game at 68% accuracy while his midfield colleagues Noah Anderson (30.2) and Matt Rowell (26.2) both received All-Australian selection following standout seasons.

The Suns led the league this year in Inside 50’s and also Hitout Win Percentage pointing to strength through the middle of the park.
