Though the more encouraging stat for Dockers fans is that 18 of the past 25 minor premiers have gone on to reach the Grand Final. Geelong, by contrast, is right at home in September, chasing an 11th top-four finish in Chris Scott's 16th season in charge, and enters with the conviction of a side that has pulled clear of the pack at just the right time.
Fremantle's qualifying final was a genuine shock as Hawthorn ran out 72 to 40 winners at Optus Stadium, with the Dockers managing just 5 goals from 57 inside-50s and coughing up 32 turnovers in their own back half. Geelong, meanwhile, are riding the crest of a seven-game winning streak, the latest instalment a 107 to 74 demolition of Carlton in the elimination final headlined by five Patrick Dangerfield goals and a 59-14 scoreline from forward-half chains.
Fremantle's underlying consistency and home advantage gives them the edge in a game that is predicted to be close up until the final siren. Luke Jackson has been a standout all season for the Dockers and cleared 27 disposals in both earlier matchups against the Cats as well as booting 4 goals combined across both games.
Take Fremantle -10.5, Luke Jackson to go over 18.5 disposals, Sam Switkowski to boot a goal, and Tom Atkins to go over 16.5 disposals at Optus Stadium on Friday night.
- Fremantle's underlying form is still strong even after the qualifying final upset - the Dockers are averaging 98.6 points a game and a +18-point margin across their last five outings.
- Luke Jackson has produced monster games in this exact matchup, with 28 disposals, 3 goals and 25 hitouts against Geelong in Round 15 and 27 disposals and a goal in the Round 1 meeting.
- Tom Atkins has had 15+ disposals in 5 straight games, going over 16.5 in 3 of those, including last weekend against Carlton.
- Dockers small forwards have kicked goals in both prior matchups this season against Geelong, Sam Switkowski is one of the fastest players and can capitalise on ground contests.
Head to Head Stats
Geelong hold a big historical edge, 31 wins to 17, though the venue record is dead even at 3-3 at Optus Stadium and the last 10 meetings are split 5-5. Fremantle's most recent win was a stirring one, overcoming a 28-point deficit to beat Geelong 14.15 (99) to 14.6 (90) in Round 15 this year, though the Cats were missing Bailey Smith and Tom Stewart that day.
Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis
Fremantle's club-record 19-win home and away season which secured them the minor premiership, came unstuck in the qualifying final, going down 5.10 (40) to 10.12 (72) against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium.
The Dockers managed just 17 points from turnover, their lowest tally from that source in six years, and their key forward trio of Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss combined for only 2 goals. Brandon Walker was forced out of that game with a nasty ankle injury in his first match back since Round 1, while Fremantle will hope for the returns of Brennan Cox (calf), Judd McVee, Bailey Banfield and Corey Wagner.
Geelong Cats Form Analysis
Geelong ended Carlton's fairytale season with a 14.23 (107) to 11.8 (74) win in the elimination final, Patrick Dangerfield kicked 5 goals in the best finals performance of his career and the Cats held the Blues under 100 points for just the second time in their opponent's 16-match coaching tenure.
It capped a seven-game winning streak averaging 35 points, though Max Holmes played limited minutes on his return from a serious ankle injury and showed signs of distress late in the game, while Jeremy Cameron remains under a fitness cloud after playing through two matches on the back of an earlier stint on the sidelines.
Fremantle Dockers vs Geelong Cats Team List & News
Fremantle Dockers Team News: The Dockers have made two changes, with Brandon Walker unable to recover from the ankle injury he suffered during his qualifying final appearance. Nathan O’Driscoll has also been dropped, with Corey Wagner and Judd McVee coming into the side. O’Driscoll has been named among the emergencies alongside Hugh Davies and Chris Scerri.
Geelong Cats Team News: The Cats have surprisingly gone unchanged despite reports young defender Sam De Koning could return to help combat Fremantle's tall forwards. De Koning remains an emergency alongside Jack Martin and Jhye Clark, with Geelong backing in the same side for its trip west.
