Brisbane Lions vs Western Bulldogs AFL Tips - Dogs to bite back at the GABBA but will it be enough?

In the AFL 2025 Round 19 face-off between Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs, the Lions hold the advantage with strong home-ground support and recent form. However, the Bulldogs' midfield, driven by Bontempelli and consistently outstanding Richards, could turn the tide if their defense holds against Brisbane's top-scoring forwards, Hipwood and Cameron. With both sides demonstrating distinct strengths, this promises to be a captivating contest. Fans are advised to take Bulldogs with a start in betting considerations, and watch for prominent performances from Ed Richards and Eric Hipwood.

It is now or never for the Western Bulldogs, who can serve it up to the Lions, despite their poor record against sides in the top half of the ladder this season.

Brisbane have been impressive in recent weeks and have won their past three, but this matchup won’t be a walkover.

The Bulldogs' midfield, led by Marcus Bontempelli and supported by the ultra-consistent Ed Richards, has the firepower to match Brisbane at the coalface. Richards, in particular, is expected to continue his outstanding form and gather plenty of the ball, while the Bulldogs' ability to control possession and rack up disposals could limit the Lions’ transition game. Brisbane’s pressure and home-ground advantage give them the edge, but expect the Bulldogs to stay within striking distance throughout.

The key question heading into this clash is whether the Bulldogs' vulnerable defence can hold up under Brisbane’s forward-half pressure. With Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron both in strong form and the Lions ranking top five for inside 50s and scores over the past month, the Dogs' backline will be under siege.

If they can hold firm, the Bulldogs' elite ball movement and efficient forward duo of Aaron Naughton and Sam Darcy can keep them in the contest.

Take the Bulldogs with the start. Ed Richards will be prominent in the disposal count, while Eric Hipwood looks a solid play for multiple goals for the home side.

  • The Bulldogs top the competition for points per game this season.
  • The Bulldogs led Brisbane by 50 points the last time the two sides met before being run down late.
  • Eric Hipwood has kicked 11 goals in the past two matches between these two sides.
  • Ed Richards has had 25+ disposals in 10 of his past 11 matches.

Head to Head

Brisbane have won the past two between the two sides. They produced a 50-point turnaround in the Gather Round clash earlier this season, turning a 39-point deficit into a 21-point victory. Eric Hipwood and Logan Morris combined for nine goals, while Hugh McCluggage and Will Ashcroft both had over 30 disposals. Ed Richards had 29 disposals for the Dogs.

The Lions were victorious the last time these two sides met at the GABBA, which was back in 2022. Lachie Neale has averaged 32.5 disposals from his past four matches against the Bulldogs. Tom Liberatore and Bailey Dale have averaged 27 for the Dogs. Eric Hipwood has kicked 11 goals in the past two matches between these two sides.

Brisbane have won their past three matches and chalked up victories over Geelong and Port Adelaide prior to the Carlton win. They have won five of their past seven, with inaccuracy costing them in the two losses in that period.

In the past five rounds, the Lions rank in the top five in the competition for disposals and clearances, inside 50s and scoring. Their win over Carlton was highlighted by their efficiency after winning clearance, while they bought a high pressure game that forced the Blues into costly turnovers.

Charlie Cameron cashed in up forward with three goals and has kicked six in the past two rounds. Five Lions had 25+ disposals, including Will Ashcroft, who has had 25+ in nine of his past 11 as well as Lachie Neale and Dayne Zorko, who have both had 25+ in three of their past four.
