It's shaping as a blockbuster showdown as World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and the rising Amanda Anisimova clash in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in Riyadh on Friday.

These two have developed quite a rivalry over the last couple of years, with nine of their 10 meetings coming at either WTA 1000s or Grand Slams. It doesn't get much bigger than this, with a place in the season-ending championships final up for grabs. Both players have impeccable records in semi-finals this season - Sabalenka has won eight of her 11 such outings, while Anisimova has gone 5-1, with her only miss coming via retirement in Charleston. Anisimova is trying to become the first debutant at the WTA Finals to beat both the No. 1 and No. 2 players after conquering Iga Swiatek in the group stage, while Sabalenka is continuing her pursuit of a first WTA Finals title and is the third No. 1 to reach three consecutive semi-finals at the year-end championships - and the first since Steffi Graf in 1990.

I'm backing Over 21.5 total games, which has landed in five of the last eight encounters between the pair. Not much separates these two, as we saw in their last two meetings at the US Open and Wimbledon. Anisimova's time will surely come over the next 12 months when it comes to slams and the biggest prizes, but I can't back against the World No. 1 in a high-pressure match. Sabalenka to edge it.

Head To Head

Anisimova leads 6-4 and is one of the few players to hold a sustained winning record over the World No. 1. However, Sabalenka has won two of the three clashes in 2025, including a most-recent 6-3 7-6 victory in the US Open final in September.

Aryna Sabalenka Form

Sabalenka enters this contest with a 62-11 record for the season, having already secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking before the WTA Finals even got underway.

It’s been another outstanding campaign for the Belarusian, though not without heartbreak - she finished runner-up at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros and fell just short in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Her persistence was rewarded in New York, where Sabalenka captured her fourth Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating Anisimova in the final to crown her major season.

Following that triumph, she made just one appearance during the Asian swing, reaching the Wuhan semi-finals before losing to Jessica Pegula in a tight deciding-set tiebreak.

Showing no signs of rust, the 27-year-old opened her WTA Finals campaign in devastating form, crushing Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-1 with 24 winners and five service breaks.

She then avenged her Wuhan loss to Pegula, prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to strengthen her case as the tournament favourite. Sabalenka proceeded to go 3-0 in the group stage, registering her 14th top 10 win of the year by toppling Coco Gauff 7-6 6-2, coming back from 2-4 down in the opening set tiebreak.

The top seed will now be looking to reach the final of the season-ending championships for the second time after back-to-back semi-final exits in 2023 and 2024.

Amanda Anisimova Form

Anisimova enters this clash with a 45-16 record, capping a remarkable comeback season that has propelled her into the world’s top four and featured two Grand Slam finals.

Having started 2024 ranked outside the world’s top 400, her rise over the past 18 months has been nothing short of extraordinary. Now, on debut at the WTA Finals, she’s one win away from competing for the title.

In addition to her Grand Slam runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open, Anisimova also captured two WTA 1000 titles - in Doha and Beijing - cementing her status among the elite.

She arrived in Riyadh after winning 26 of her last 32 matches, but was outplayed by Elena Rybakina in her opener. The American responded impressively, rallying from a set down to defeat Madison Keys 4-6 6-3 6-2, keeping her semi-final hopes alive heading into the final group match.

Anisimova then confirmed her semi-final status with a brilliant victory over Iga Swiatek, once again coming from a set down to emerge victorious by a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 score. Incredibly, Anisimova was the first player since 2022 to hit 40 winners in a WTA Finals match.

Verdict

Not much separates these two as they collide in another high-stakes match.

Sabalenka has won two of the three meetings in 2025 and has more experience in these situations - backing the World No. 1 to prevail in a close one.
