Taylor Fritz meets Alexei Popyrin in the Geneva Open's second round, marking Fritz's return from a knee injury that has hampered his 2026 season. While Fritz holds a higher ranking, recent struggles on clay and fitness issues make him vulnerable. Popyrin, showing improved clay form and boasting previous top 10 wins, is tipped to edge this encounter, especially given his big serve and the Geneva altitude. The head-to-head is tied 1-1, with expectations of at least one tiebreak and a closely contested match.

Taylor Fritz vs Alexei Popyrin Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Taylor Fritz returns to action for his first clay tournament of the season when he comes up against Alexei Popyrin in the Geneva Open second round on Wednesday.

Fritz has been battling chronic knee tendinitis all season and made the decision to skip the majority of the clay swing for some much-needed rest and recovery. The American was clearly struggling to start the season and it will be interesting to see if his movement and form improves upon his return to court.

Meanwhile, Popyrin has endured a rough last nine months or so on tour, but there's been gradual improvements on clay and the Aussie remains dangerous if he can get firing on all cylinders - those 13 previous top 10 victories didn't come by accident.

I'm going to take the plunge on Popyrin here. Knee tendinitis can be extremely difficult to manage and it remains to be seen if six weeks on the sidelines is enough for Fritz. Popyrin actually enjoys clay, where he gets a bit more bounce and time on his groundies The altitude in Geneva will also compliment his big serve. The Aussie has a good chance to take advantage of a rusty Fritz, while I'm also backing the Overs and at least one tiebreak - stats below.
  • Fritz has seen 1+ tiebreak in 13 of his last 19 matches
  • Fritz has seen 1+ tiebreak in three of his last four Geneva matches
  • Popyrin has played three tiebreaks in his last two Geneva matches
  • These two played three tiebreaks in their most-recent meeting
  • Fritz has lost his opening match in two of his last three clay tournaments
  • Popyrin has a 3-3 record in his last six clay matches vs top 10 players
  • Fritz has lost three of his last four Geneva matches, all vs players outside the top 30

Taylor Fritz Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 12-8
  • ATP Geneva Record: 303
  • Current Ranking: No. 8
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 4

It's been a disappointing season for Fritz, who has dropped down to No. 8 in the rankings amid a battle with chronic knee tendinitis.

Not sure if Fritz will be able to fully get over his knee issues, but what I've seen so far this year hasn't been encouraging.

Fritz's best result was a runner-up finish in Dallas, but he largely failed to produce anywhere near his best level at the big events, failing to go beyond the R16 at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami.

After going down to Jiri Lehecka in Miami, Fritz decided to skip Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome in an attempt to rest his troublesome knee, returning one week before the French Open here in Geneva.

The American doesn't have a great record in Geneva, going 3-3 and losing three of his last four matches at the tournament.

Alexei Popyrin Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 7-12
  • ATP Geneva Record: 3-1
  • Current Ranking: No. 61
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 19 (August 2025)

Popyrin’s trajectory has taken a sharp downturn, with the Australian slipping well away from the top 20 less than a year after breaking into that tier for the first time.

A brutal 10-match losing streak spanning the end of last season and the start of this one highlighted his struggles, although the transition to clay has offered some signs of stability.

There have still been inconsistencies - he reached the quarter-finals in Houston, but exited in the opening round at both Monte Carlo and Madrid.

However, Popyrin found some nice rhythm in Rome. He produced a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win over former World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini, before backing it up with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory against Jakub Mensik to reach the third round, where he ultimately went down to Jannik Sinner.

Popyrin is back in Geneva, where he made the quarter-finals last year. The 28-year-old was made to work hard in his opening round, but survived with a 7-6(2) 6-7(5) 6-4 victory over World No. 165 Clement Tabur.
