Musetti was the third best player in the world on clay last year behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but has been struck down by injury to start the season. The Italian has seemingly got back to full fitness and is starting to generate some momentum in Barcelona, making the quarter-finals without dropping a set across his opening two rounds.

Fils meanwhile is also back from a lengthy spell on the sidelines and has been extremely impressive over the last month or so, reaching the Doha final and Miami Masters semi-finals.

This has all the ingredients to be a classic Barcelona quarter-final between two of the sport's best talents. It's an even match-up, but on clay I think the edge goes to Musetti. The Italian moves so well on this surface and he's got an incredible record against those ranked below him on the dirt. Musetti has also won his last six clay court quarter-finals. It should be tight, but Musetti closes it out for me.

Musetti stretched himself to the limit late last season to secure a maiden ATP Finals appearance - but that physical exertion affected his start to 2026.

He arrived in Barcelona still without a win since the Australian Open, where a leg injury forced him to retire from his quarter-final against Novak Djokovic.

Musetti’s comeback began at Indian Wells, but it was short-lived, suffering a straight-sets loss to Márton Fucsovics. An arm problem then sidelined him in Miami, and even with extra recovery time, his form remained flat, exiting early in Monte Carlo to Valentin Vacherot.

However, it looks like Musetti is regaining his strength on the dirt in Barcelona, where he produced his strongest performance since January, recovering from a sluggish start and a 1-4 deficit to defeat a rising Martin Landaluce 7-5, 6-2. Musetti then subdued enigmatic Frenchman Corentin Moutet with a solid 6-3 6-4 victory to reach the quarter-finals.

Fils has been in outstanding form since returning from the back injury that limited him to just one tournament after Roland Garros last season.

Only top-tier opposition has been able to halt his momentum, with Felix Auger-Aliassime edging him in Montpellier during the early stages of his comeback, followed by a loss to Alex de Minaur in Rotterdam.

Fils continued to build, reaching the final in Doha before running into Carlos Alcaraz and then progressing to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, where he was stopped by Alexander Zverev.

He elevated his level further in Miami, advancing to the semi-finals, highlighted by a dramatic quarter-final win over Tommy Paul in which he saved five match points, before eventually falling to Jiri Lehecka.

Electing to skip Monte Carlo to manage his workload, Fils arrived in Barcelona refreshed and that helped him outlast Terence Atmane 4-6 6-4 7-6(7) in his opening round, saving two match points. The 21-year-old then eased past Brandon Nakashima 6-2 6-3 to advance into the Barcelona quarter-finals for the third consecutive year.
