Hurkacz put together a promising start to the season during the Aussie summer, but it was soured somewhat by a disappointing second round exit at the Australian Open to Ethan Quinn. Can the big-serving Pole get back on track in favourable conditions in Montpellier? He's got a challenging opening round opponent in Martin Damm, who is equipped with a big lefty serve and dangerous in these sorts of situations.

Indeed, Damm fired down a whopping 36 aces in his final round of qualifying, striking 75 per cent of first serves. If the American can replicate those numbers, he will prove very difficult to break against any opponent indoors. Hurkacz, as we know, is also one of the best servers on tour. There's value to be had for Damm to snatch the opening set in a tiebreak.

Hurkacz endured an injury-ravaged 2025 campaign and was forced to shut down his year during the grass swing after undergoing knee surgery.

It was an encouraging return for Hurkacz down under, producing some spectacular tennis at the United Cup as he helped lead Poland to the title.

The 28-year-old won four of his five matches, including taking the top 10 scalps of Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz.

Such was his form, many were talking about Hurkacz being a dark horse at the Australian Open, but the Pole was lacklustre, coming through a tough opening round against Zizou Bergs before falling in straight sets to Ethan Quinn.

This will be Hurkacz's first appearance in Montpellier since 2021 - he is yet to win a match at the tournament.

Damm is currently operating at a career-high ranking of No. 160 and his goal for the remainder of 2026 would be to break into the top 100.

The 22-year-old certainly has the firepower to make an impact on tour. Damm successfully qualified for the Australian Open, dropping just one set in his three victories, but he was no match for Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot in the first round of the main draw, going down 6-4 6-4 6-4.

The American was bundled out in the first round of a Challenger in Oeiras last week, but has bounced back strongly in Montpelllier, qualifying for the main draw with wins over Matteo Martineau and Clement Tabur.

As mentioned, Damm was unstoppable on serve during the 7-6 6-7 7-6 win over Tabur, firing down 36 aces and saving all break points faced. He also saved a match point in the deciding set tiebreak.
