Fils had been dealing with a back injury for a while before it flared up during his epic French Open first round win over Jaume Munar in five sets. The 21-year-old was forced to withdraw from the tournament and only played one more event for the season, shutting down his year after Canada.
It was a cruel twist of fate for Fils, who had just peaked at No. 14 in the rankings and was looking like breaking into the top 10. The Frenchman made consecutive Masters 1000 quarter-finals at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo and will be hoping his body holds up as he begins his 2026 campaign.
