Ben Shelton continues his BMW Open campaign in Munich when he comes up against the rising Alexander Blockx in the second round on Wednesday.
After finishing runner-up in Munich last year, Shelton is hoping to go one step further this tournament, but he's finding himself in lots of close battles lately and I think he could be in for another tight contest against one of the sport's best young prospects.
Incredibly, Shelton has seen a first set tiebreak in his last six matches - including his opening Munich encounter against Emilio Nava. The American has arguably the best serve in tennis, but sometimes his return game is barely top 50. This of course leads to ample tiebreaks.
Blockx meanwhile continues to break new ground with each passing week - he won back-to-back tour-level matches for the first time in Monte Carlo and now he faces a top 10 player for the second straight tournament after pushing Alex de Minaur last week, including taking one set to a tiebreak.
Like I do with almost every Shelton match, I'm backing at least one tiebreak at close to even money, which I think is great value. Bit of extra juice on the first set going to a tiebreak and Shelton digging out the win in three sets.

Shelton opened the season in strong fashion, reaching another Australian Open quarter-final before securing his fourth ATP title at the 500 event in Dallas.
His momentum stalled heading into the Sunshine Swing, with illness disrupting his preparation and limiting him to just one win across Indian Wells and Miami, where he fell to Learner Tien and Alexander Shevchenko.
The transition to clay in Houston offered little improvement, as ongoing physical issues persisted, resulting in a solitary victory before a defeat to Thiago Agustín Tirante.
Shelton again was forced to dig deep in his Munich opener against his good mate Emilio Nava, edging the first set in a tiebreak, dropping the second before closing it out in three, 7-6(4) 3-6 6-3.
“It’s tough. Not just [playing against] another American, but probably my best friend out on Tour, or one of a few,” Shelton said.
"So to get through that, I’m really happy. Starting my run here in Munich, it’s a special place for me, and I’m just excited to keep going.”

Blockx has made rapid progress since claiming his first tour-level win at the Cincinnati Masters last year, backing it up with consistent work on the Challenger circuit to break into the world’s top 100 - a position he looks capable of improving quickly over the coming months.
The Belgian launched his season by winning the strong Canberra Challenger and qualifying for the Australian Open main draw, results that propelled his rise.
Now pushing for even more, the 20-year-old made an immediate impact on clay in Monte Carlo, winning four matches to reach the round of 16 on debut after progressing through qualifying before stunning Denis Shapovalov and 10th seed Flavio Cobolli to secure his first victory over a top-20 opponent. Blockx's run was eventually halted by Alex de Minaur, but he was competitive in a 7-5 7-6(4) defeat.
Blockx has maintained his high level in transitioning to Munich this week, earning an impressive 7-6(2) 6-2 victory over Yannick Hanfmann in his opening round.
