Tour de France 2023 Preview

It is the 110th edition of the French Grand Tour and it has the makings to be a classic with two favourites that cannot be split heading into the race start on July 1st, in Bilbao, Spain.

Most bookmakers have both last year’s Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard and 2021 and 2020 winner Tadej Pogacar priced at similar odds, giving no clear favourite to win the gruelling 21-stage race.

Jumbo-Visma team Leader, Vingegaard, backed up his 2022 Tour win with an impressive 2023 season, winning 3 of 4 stage races in dominant fashion. The 26-year-old Dane won the O Gran Camiño, Itzulia Basque Country and most recently the Critérium du Dauphiné, proving that he has what it takes once again to bear the yellow jersey into Champs-Élysées.

Tadej Pogacar has warmed up for the Tour de France 2023 with a very different strategy than his rival Vingegaard. Tadej Pogacar and UAE Team Emirates won the 2023 Paris-Nice in March, which was the last time the Slovenien and Vingegaard faced each other. Pogacar then decided to focus on training and participating in one-day events, which he has won 14 of this year.

If there is going to be any sort of surprise winner in 2023 it will most likely be Aussie Jai Hindley, who won the Giro d’Italia in 2022. The 27-year-old Bore-Hamsgrohe rider, has had a strong 2023 season with his best result in the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he placed fourth.

Tour de France 2023 General Classification (Yellow Jersey) Best Bet

If all the stars align for both Vingegaard and Pogacar and they get through the 3400km unscathed, the 2023 Tour de France can be one of the closest fought battles in the history of the great race.

The bookmakers may not be able to split the two favourites, but I have faith that UAE Team Emirates have put into place a stronger team in 2023. The Emirati team have given Pogacar the support he needs in the critical mountain stages to take back the crown and win his third French Grand Tour.

The addition of Adam Yates to UAE, who finished second behind Vingegaard in the Critérium du Dauphiné, gives Pogacar the strong tow-man up the early stages of the mountains, which he was missing in 2022.

He will have the endurance and power he then needs at the peak to kick-on away from the Dane, and hand himself the command in the race to Paris.

Tour de France 2023 Points Classification (Green Jersey) Best Bet

Jasper Philipsen, last year's runner-up in the green jersey competition, seems well-prepared to make a strong bid for victory this year.

The current Tour poses a challenge with early mountain stages and limited opportunities for pure field sprinters.

Alpecin-Deceuninck are not focused on the Yellow Jersey and will be purely focused on aiding Philipsen's ability to handle tougher finishes and give him an advantage to score points when others may struggle or have their priorities elsewhere.

Tour de France 2023 Win 3+ Stages Best Prop Bet

Wout Van Aert is an incredibly skilled cyclist and is a force to be reckoned with in the mountains, sprints, and time trials. Many consider him to be one of the most well-rounded and talented riders in the field.

The Belgian came out saying his focus is on winning stages and not the Green Jersey in 2023, so matching his performance of three race wins in 2022 is a good value bet.

Verdict

Tadej Pogacar has all the tools in his belt in 2023 to take back the Yellow Jersey from Dane, Jonas Vingegaard and win the race to Paris for UAE Team Emirates.

Jesper Philipsen will go one better than last year’s tour and win the Green Jersey in the Points Classification. Wout Van Aert will match his performance in 2022 and take at least 3 stage victories in this year’s Tour de France.
