Ballarat Tips July 14
Global Turf Maiden Plate Tips (Race 2)
Ballarat Value Bet - Race 2 No. 5 Commandeur
Earlier efforts this season suggested Commandeur wasn't far from a breakthrough, and he resumed with a solid fifth in a Soft-track maiden at Narrandera last month.
Jumping from a wide barrier, the gelding was beaten just over three-and-a-half lengths in that 1000m contest on his first appearance for the Frankie Stockdale stable.
The son of Tagaloa took another step forward when making his synthetic debut at Pakenham last time, finishing second over 1200m after going down by less than half a length.
A kinder draw is another positive, with barrier two giving him every chance to settle closer to the speed.
Valentin Le Boeuf retains the ride, and while the strength of the Pakenham form is yet to be tested, Commandeur looks value to break through.
Global Turf BM70 Handicap Tips (Race 5)
Ballarat Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Surreal I Am
Few runners boast a stronger synthetic record than Surreal I Am, who has won three of five starts on the all-weather.
His latest victory came at Pakenham last month, where he bolted in by more than four lengths at this Benchmark 70 level after leading throughout.
The five-year-old backed that up with another excellent effort, finishing second by less than half a length over the same track and trip later in the month.
Dramaticus finished behind him on that occasion, and there's little reason to suggest the form will be reversed.
A favourable draw and the booking of Jye McNeil for the first time further strengthen his claims on debut at Ballarat.
Hygain Edge BM66 Handicap Tips (Race 6)
Ballarat Roughie - Race 6 No. 10 Grunnettan
Previous form at Ballarat reads well for Grunnettan, who has finished in the top three at three of his four starts at the venue.
Two of those placings have come in his past three runs, including a runner-up finish over this trip earlier this month.
Ridden patiently in a Benchmark 52 contest, the gelding worked home strongly to be beaten by less than a length.
Similar tactics are expected from barrier nine, while Caitlin Hollowood's 2kg claim helps him carry a light weight.
The rise in grade presents a challenge, but at generous odds he looks capable of recording the second win of his career.
Hygain Edge BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 8)
Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Audio Pop Cam
Synthetic racing has suited Audio Pop Cam throughout her career, with two of her three victories coming on the all-weather.
The filly rounded out her previous preparation with a respectable seventh in a competitive straight-track event at Flemington before two encouraging jump-outs ahead of this campaign.
She resumed with a strong win over this track and trip three weeks ago, finishing powerfully to score by just under half a length at Benchmark 64 level.
That form received a timely boost when fourth-placegetter Nightime Star won on turf at Geelong on Friday.
Barrier five looks ideal, Olivia East takes the ride for the first time, and the drop in grade gives the McEvoy-trained filly every chance to make it back-to-back victories.
