Manchester United return to the Champions League after a two-year absence, facing Azerbaijani champions Sabah, who are making their group stage debut. United, despite defensive vulnerabilities, are strong favorites and expected to score at least four goals. Sabah have netted in their last 14 games and could get a consolation strike. Marcus Rashford is highlighted as a probable goalscorer if fit. United’s shaky defense and upcoming derby may influence rotations, while Sabah enter with growing confidence and a fully fit squad.

Manchester United vs Sabah Champions League Tips & Prediction

Man United are the overwhelming favourites to beat Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday night, but the visitors can sneak a consolation goal in what is looming as a triumphant return to UCL action for the hosts.

United are back in the Champions League after a two-year absence and they have a dream opening draw to secure all three points and get their campaign off to a positive start.

Sabah were only formed nine years ago and successfully navigated four rounds of qualifying to reach the league phase. Having usurped Qarabag as champions of Azerbaijan, Sabah are massive $20 outsiders to spring the upset on the road in what is by far the biggest game of the club's short existence.

The best betting angle for this clash looks to be the goals markets. United should win this comfortably, but their defence remains suspect and vulnerable - they've conceded six goals in their three Premier League games, including two at Old Trafford to Ipswich and two more on the road to Hull, two newly-promoted teams.

With Sabah scoring in their last 14 competitive fixtures, the visitors look a decent shout to find the back of the net in defeat here. United also put five past Ipswich in that 5-2 Premier League win and should be able to score at least four at plus money odds here.

Pending a late fitness test, Marcus Rashford could be the best anytime goalscorer option. The winger starred for Barcelona in the UCL last term and will be keen to replicate that form for United here - it's the perfect game to build up some confidence and get back on the scoresheet.
  • United have conceded six goals in their last three games
  • United leaked two goals vs Ipswich at Old Trafford
  • United also conceded twice vs Hull and Everton in the Premier League to open the season
  • Sabah have scored in their last 14 games in all comps
  • United have won six straight European home games, scoring 20 goals in the process
  • Marcus Rashford scored five goals in the UCL for Barca last term

Manchester United Form Analysis

It's been a shaky start to the Premier League season for United and Michael Carrick is under pressure to get his side going in the club's Champions League return here.

United were embarrassing in their opening EPL defeat on the road to Hull, barely threatening as they conceded two goals from set pieces to central defenders, going down 2-0.

There was an immediate response at Old Trafford, but United were arguably outplayed by Ipswich for the majority of the opening half before running away with the game in the second stanza, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a 28-minute hat-trick.

United must have thought they'd done enough to make it back-to-back wins last weekend away to Everton after goals from Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo put them 2-1 ahead going into injury time, but an absolute worldie from Ainsley Maitland-Niles secured the Toffees a point.

Manchester United Team News

Matthijs de Ligt (back), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Carlos Baleba (ankle), Amad Diallo (ankle) and Tom Heaton remain sidelined for United.

Rashford came off with a knock against Everton, but is likely to be declared fit for this one - but the winger might have to be content with another cameo off the bench.

Carrick might choose to rotate his starting side ahead of this weekend's Manchester Derby with City.

Manchester United Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw; Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans; Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha; Benjamin Sesko

Sabah Form Analysis

It's been a dream last 12 months for Sabah, who claimed their first league premiership in Azerbaijan before building on that momentum to qualify for the Champions League at their first attempt.

Valdas Dambrauskas' side got the better of TNS, KuPS, Aarhus and Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the qualifying rounds to book their spot amongst Europe's elite.

Sabah have also picked up a maximum nine points to start the new domestic campaign, including a most-recent 5-0 thumping of Zira, with Rwandan striker Joy-Lance Mickels scoring a hat-trick.

Sabah Team News

Mickels has eight goals in 11 appearances this season and should pose the main goal threat for Sabah up front.

The Azerbaijani champions look to have a full squad to choose from here. Veljko Simic is another player to watch, with seven goals and one assist already this season.

Sabah Possible Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Stas Pokatilov; Tellur Mutallimov, Rahman Dashdamirov, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Steve Solvet; Aleksey Isayev, Umarali Rakhmonaliyev; Christian Nwachukwu, Ivan Lepinjica, Veljko Simic; Joy Lance Mickels

Verdict

United are backed to score 4+ goals and Sabah are a chance for a consolation strike. If passed fit, Rashford is a good chance to find the back of the net.
