Sydney FC and Auckland FC are heading into a crucial Australia Cup quarter-final at Jubilee Stadium. Sydney seeks redemption after a less successful A-League season, bolstered by new signing Marcel Tisserand. Auckland, having enjoyed a stellar debut in the league, looks formidable after clean-sheet victories in their last matches. Historical encounters show a closely matched rivalry, with their last game ending in a 2-2 draw. The fixture is expected to be tightly contested, potentially being decided in penalties after regular time.

Sydney FC vs Auckland FC Tips & Predictions

Two-time champions Sydney FC face reigning A-League minor premiers Auckland FC for a place in the Australia Cup semi-finals on Saturday night at Jubilee Stadium.

It's a fantastic opportunity to reach the final of the Australia Cup for both these teams, with NPL Victoria side Heidelberg United waiting in the semis - however, they certainly can't be underestimated after dispatching A-League teams in the Wanderers and Wellington in back-to-back matches. However, the winner of this game would certainly start as favourites.

It's a difficult game to call. Not much form to go on obviously still being very much in preseason, but their most-recent clash was a 2-2 draw and I wouldn't be surprised if these two sides couldn't be separated again after 90 minutes. Penalties could decide who advances to the final four, with both teams scoring in normal time.

Head To Head

Auckland were narrow 1-0 winners in the first meeting between the two sides in Round 2 of the last A-League season before a 2-2 share of the spoils in Round 26. Adrian Segecic - who has since departed for Portsmouth and has set the Championship alight in the opening games - scored a double in that encounter.

Sydney FC Form

It was a hugely disappointing last season for Sydney - they finished outside of the finals in the A-League and wasted a wonderful opportunity to host the AFC Champions League 2 final, going down to Singapore side Lion City in the semis.

The Sky Blues will be hoping for more success in this competition, which they have won two times previously.

Sydney haven't conceded a goal on their way to the quarter-finals, edging Western United 1-0 in the R32 before a 2-0 triumph over NPL NSW side Sydney United in the R16.

The club recently announced the signing of experienced DR Congo international Marcel Tisserand, who has played in the UEFA Champions League. Tisserand is a chance to make his Sydney debut here.

Auckland FC Form

Auckland put together a brilliant debut season in the A-League, finishing the regular campaign on top of the ladder - although they would have been disappointed with a semi-final elimination against Melbourne Victory after bringing a 1-0 advantage into the second leg at home.

However, that's in the past and now Auckland have a chance for more silverware in their inaugural Australia Cup campaign.

Steve Corica's side also haven't conceded in reaching the last eight, coasting past Gold Coast Knights 4-0 and South Melbourne 3-0.

English striker Sam Cosgrove has recently joined the club from League One side Barnsley and could be a late inclusion.

Verdict

Tough game to call between two A-League heavyweights.

The most-recent meeting resulted in a 2-2 draw, so backing both teams to find the back of the net and the scores being level after 90 minutes.
