Heidelberg United vs Newcastle Jets Tips & Predictions - Jets to win first Australia Cup trophy

The Australia Cup final sees Heidelberg United, having never conceded a goal in the tournament and defeating three A-League teams, face off against Newcastle Jets, who have found excellent form under new manager Mark Milligan. Heidelberg is aiming for a historic title as the first NPL winner, but face a Jets team with more top-flight experience and attacking options. While Heidelberg's defense and fairytale run shouldn’t be underestimated, tipping leans towards Newcastle Jets, whose depth, recent performance, and superior squad make them slight favorites. The match promises excitement and could see both sides score.

Heidelberg United vs Newcastle Jets Tips & Predictions

It's shaping as a historic night at Lakeside Stadium as Heidelberg United and Newcastle Jets square off in the 2025 Australia Cup final on Saturday night.

Either Heidelberg will complete a fairytale run to become the first NPL side to secure the Australia Cup, or the Jets will win their first piece of silverware since beating rivals Central Coast in the 2008 A-League Grand Final. Heidelberg have been on fire throughout the tournament, not conceding a single goal and conquering three A-League sides, while the Jets have broken through after a series of early exits in this competition, toppling defending champions Macarthur on their way to the final.

I've got to back the Jets at plus money here. At the end of the day, Newcastle are the superior side and now they've got plenty of match practice under their belt - as opposed to the other A-League sides that Heidelberg had beaten earlier in the tournament. The Jets were able to take care of Avondale - another NPL Victoria side - 4-2 in the semi-finals and I'm backing a similar outcome as Mark Milligan completes a dream start to life as Newcastle manager.

Head To Head

This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Heidelberg United Form

Regardless of the outcome in this final, it's been an excellent season for Heidelberg.

After finishing second on the ladder during the regular season and reaching the final of the Dockerty Cup, Heidelberg defeated Dandenong City 2-1 in the NPL Victoria Grand Final.

But this cinderella run to a first Australia Cup final has undoubtedly been the highlight.

Heidelberg started their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Western Bears in the R32 before knocking out three A-League sides on their way to the final.

John Anastasiadis's side crushed the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals, where they proceeded to defeat a pair of Kiwi clubs, demolishing Wellington Phoenix 4-0 before a 2-0 triumph over Auckland FC in the semi-finals.

Heidelberg United Team News

Big blow for Heidelberg as Sabit Ngor has finished his loan spell and returned to the Mariners this week.

Bul Juach and Asahi Yokokawa have both scored three goals in the Australia Cup this tournament and will be the main attacking threats for the Bergers.

Newcastle Jets Form

Having traditionally struggled in the Australia Cup, it's been a remarkable reversal of fortunes for the Jets in this season's competition.

After a bright finish to the A-League season, Mark Milligan has taken over as manager and the Jets are enjoying immediate success.

Newcastle began their campaign with a gritty come-from-behind victory over Adelaide United in the r32 before easily accounting for Northern NSW NPL side Cooks Hill 5-0.

The Jets then stepped it up a notch, eliminating defending champions Macarthur FC 3-0 before holding their nerve to hold off Avondale FC 4-2 in the semi-finals.

Newcastle Jets Team News

Rising star Alex Baldato is away with the Young Socceroos at the U-20 FIFA World Cup and will miss the final.

Fellow youngster Xavier Bertoncello looms as a key player having already scored twice in this competition, while veteran Japanese winger Kota Mizunuma has netted on three occasions and his class could prove the difference in the final third.

Verdict

Have to back the A-League side at plus money here - the Jets have been in fine form since Milligan took over and were the better side against NPL Vic opposition in the semi-finals when they beat Avondale 4-2.

Heidelberg have put together a glorious run and should be good for a goal at Lakeside, but the Jets' class should shine through in the end.
