Western United vs Newcastle Jets Tips & Predictions

Western United have the chance to draw level on points with Melbourne City and Adelaide United (at least temporarily) at the top of the table when they host Newcastle Jets to launch A-League Round 15 action on Friday.

Western are on an amazing run of form and are backed to register what would be a sixth win in their last seven matches against a Newcastle side who have only defeated one team above them on the ladder all season. The Jets have managed to find the back of the net in their last five outings, but Western are on a different level right now and can continue their charge up the ladder by securing another three points, while in-form striker Hiroshi Ibusaki is tipped for another big performance.

  • Western have won five of their last six games
  • Jets have lost seven of their 11 games this season
  • Jets have scored in their last five games
  • Hiroshi Ibusaki has scored seven goals this season (second-most in the league)

Head To Head

This will be the first meeting between the clubs this season. The Jets prevailed 4-1 in the Australia Cup playoffs during preseason, but both clubs fielded understrength teams, while Western were 2-0 winners in their most-recent A-League encounter in February 2024.

Western United Form

It's been a tremendous last couple of months for Western, with the team rising up the ladder and having a chance to draw level on 24 points with league leaders Melbourne City and Adelaide United here.

John Aloisi's side are gaining a reputation for pulling off miraculous comebacks and they were at it again last weekend, with Western stealing all three points with a stunning 4-3 win over Melbourne Victory.

Western were forced to draw level on three occasions before Noah Botic and Hiroshi Ibusaki scored twice in injury time to seal another memorable win.

Having also conquered the likes of Sydney FC and Auckland FC over the last month (scoring seven goals combined in those victories), Western are certainly one of the form teams in the competition heading into Round 15.

Western United Team News

Charbell Shamoon is questionable for this clash, while James Donachie continues to battle a calf injury.

Newcastle Jets Form

It's been another disappointing season for the Jets and they will almost certainly miss out on the finals once again.

To be fair, Newcastle simply don't have the cattle to compete with the majority of A-League teams on a consistent basis, with Rob Stanton doing his best to get the most out of his younger crop of players.

The Jets had been travelling okay with recent wins over Perth and Brisbane, along with a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC, but they missed a good opportunity to build some momentum last week.

Indeed, Newcastle opened the scoring at home against Macarthur, but they couldn't go on with the job, ultimately suffering a 3-1 defeat.

Newcastle Jets Team News

You'd have to think Lachie Rose and Wellissol are a chance to start together in the final third after the attacking duo have come off the bench in the last few games.

Verdict

Western are firing on all cylinders and they have a great opportunity to continue their excellent form and post a sixth win in seven games here.

The Jets simply can't compete consistently with the in-form teams in the competition and are coming off a 3-1 home loss against Macarthur. Backing Western to win with both teams scoring, while Hiroshi Ibusaki is as good a chance as anyone for first goalscorer after bagging seven already this term.
