In an A-League clash, Melbourne Victory aims to extend their winning streak to five games against the struggling Western Sydney Wanderers. Victory’s recent form is driven by Greek striker Nikos Vergos and midfield maestro Juan Mata, who's been pivotal since joining. The Wanderers, despite a fleeting resurgence, have experienced a tough season, managing only two wins and failing to score in four of their last five games. This match is an opportunity for Victory to make a statement, with Mata set to face his former club.

Melbourne Victory vs Western Sydney Wanderers Tips & Prediction

Melbourne Victory look to keep their blistering run of form going when they welcome last-placed Western Sydney Wanderers to AAMI Park on Saturday in the A-League.

It's the A-League's most in-form team up against the side anchored to the bottom of the ladder when Victory and the Wanderers collide on Saturday. Nobody has accumulated more points than Victory's 13 over the last five rounds, while the Wanderers remain with just two wins heading into Round 12, with the pressure mounting on Alen Stajcic.

Juan Mata has been in electric form since joining Victory and now the midfield maestro gets the opportunity to come up against his former club, who for some inexplicable reason couldn't fit him into their plans. Anyone who loves a narrative bet will be on Mata for Anytime Goalscorer - the Spanish superstar has created more chances than any other player this season and was unlucky not to find the back of the net against Perth Glory in his last outing, blazing just high of the crossbar either side of half-time. It's the A-League, so anything can happen, but this is a great chance for Victory to make it five wins on the spin, but recent meetings between the teams suggest both teams should find the back of the net.
  • Victory are on a four-game winning streak
  • Wanderers have lost four of their last five games
  • BTTS has landed in the last six meetings between the teams
  • BTTS has landed in three of Victory's last four games
  • Juan Mata has created 35 chances this season (most in the comp) & has a league-high four assists
  • The winning team has scored exactly four goals in three of the last four regular season A-League games between the sides

Victory vs Wanderers Head To Head

These teams split their three meetings in 2025 with one win apiece and a draw. Victory prevailed 2-1 in the most-recent clash in the opening week of the finals last season.

Melbourne Victory Form Analysis

Victory are the hottest team in the A-League coming into Round 12, but the fact they're barely inside the top six (in 6th) showcases just how poor they were at the start of the season.

However, that's all in the rear view now as Victory head into this contest on the back of a four-game winning run, playing some sizzling football with the goals flowing freely.

Greek striker Nikos Vergos has well and truly snapped his goal drought, leading the charts with five strikes for the season, while Juan Mata's wizardry has proven instrumental to Victory's current success.

Mata provided two assists for Nishan Velupillay and Clarismario Santos in the 3-2 win over in-form Perth Glory in Victory's last outing, with Louis D’Arrigo also getting on the scoresheet.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form Analysis

It's been a horror season so far for the Wanderers, with the former Asian champions languishing in last spot on the ladder after 11 rounds, winning just two games and losing six.

It appeared as if the Wanderers were starting to find their groove after that big derby win over rivals Sydney FC, but they've slipped back into old habits and are completely flat in the final third, scoring just eight goals for the season - which is three less than the next worst side.

With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Wanderers have failed to score in four of their last five games, with the only exception being a 3-2 loss to Adelaide on the road where they conceded in stoppage time.

The Wanderers were again toothless up front in their most-recent game on New Year's Day, slumping to a dour 1-0 loss to Macarthur at home.

Verdict

Victory should be set for a fifth consecutive win, but the Wanderers can snap their goal drought by finding the back of the net in defeat. The stage is set for Juan Mata to score against his former club.
