South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Sydney Roosters, Round 5 2025 - Expert Prediction
Latrell Mitchell’s return will give Souths more of a spark in attack and will lift them past the Roosters in the Sydney derby on Friday night at Accor Stadium.
The Bunnies' fearless leader returns, BUT, in the centres with Jye Gray staging at the back. Wayne Bennett has worked his magic already in Redfern with their 3-1 start to the season and the Mitchell on the edge trick up his sleeve is another masterstroke, I believe.
Early ball to Mitchell will cause all sorts of problems for the Roosters defence that has given up the third-most linebreaks this season to their opponents.
Trell will do the damage in his return and will cross the line as the Bunnies put up a decent score against the Roosters covering their team total and the 2.5 points as the favourite.
- South Sydney are 3-1 to start the season
- The Roosters have conceded 30 points or more in 3 of 4 matches this season
- The Roosters have a 2-4 record at Accor Stadium, giving up 26 points or more in 4 of 6 matches at the venue since the 2021 season.
- Latrell Mitchell has 6 tries in his last 6 matches and 7 tries in his last 8 games when starting at centre.
Head to Head
The Roosters have won the last 4 meetings against Souths and 5 of the last 6 . However the head-to-head battle is neck and neck with both teams winning 7 matches a piece since the 2019 season.
The pair last met in Round 27 last season with Sydney running away with it 36-28 at Accor Stadium.

Souths couldn’t really have had a better start to the 2025 season with the return of Wayne Bennet to Redfern. Three wins from their first 4 matches is a dream after their nightmare 2024 season and all without their main man Latrell Mitchell, who returns this week against the Chooks.
I am still a bit weary of the Bunnies and won’t be laying money down on a premiership just yet. The Souths’ schedule has been an easy one if you look the results this season of their opponents, with their three victories coming against teams that have had ordinary starts.
Bennett has seen an improvement in his side defensively this season after averaging 28.4 opposition points per game in 2024, The Bunnies now give up an average of 8 points less through their first 4 matches of 2025.

It is a tough year to be a Chooks fan, at least to begin with. Another loss, this time at the hands of the Titans 30-12 last Friday night, gives them a 1-3 record to begin the season. But it is not an unfamiliar place to be for the Roosters who also started last season 2-3 and are known to be a bit slow out of the blocks.
Plenty has changed in Bondi and it will take some time to adjust, that being said, they better get a move on.
The Roosters led the league with 29.9 points per game and were ranked second with 6.3 linebreaks, but that spark in attack is not even in the stratosphere of the Eastern Suburbs. Sydney are still breaking the line and gaining workable territory, however they are flat against their opposition line and have scored 14 points or less in their three losses this season.
