NRL Finals 2025 – Dates, Structure and Teams to Watch

The 2025 NRL Finals are shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. With the regular season winding down, fans are already asking two key questions: when do the finals start, and how does the finals system actually work? Add in the burning debate over who can finally stop the Penrith Panthers juggernaut, and September footy is set to deliver fireworks.

When Do the NRL Finals Start?

The 2025 NRL Finals series begins on Friday, September 12th, running across four action-packed weeks before the NRL Grand Final on Sunday, October 5th. Each week features sudden-death clashes, with the top four teams given a double chance while those finishing 5th–8th face elimination from the outset.

How the NRL Finals Structure Works

The NRL have employed their own brand of Finals System since 2012 after replacing the McIntyre System which was prevelant across major footy codes throughout the 90's and early 2000's.

The top eight teams at the end of the regular season play a four-week knockout series. The top four are rewarded with a double chance and a shorter path to the grand final, needing only two wins to qualify. The bottom four face sudden death from the start and must win three straight games to make the decider. Home advantage also favours the top seeds, making ladder position crucial.

  • Week 1: Top 4 play qualifying finals (winners go straight to prelims), 5th–8th play elimination finals (losers are out).
  • Week 2: Losers of QFs play winners of EF in semi-finals.
  • Week 3: Prelims - winners go to the Grand Final.
  • Week 4: NRL Grand Final at Accor Stadium, Sydney.

Does the Minor Premiership Really Matter?

Finishing first across 27 grueling rounds should mean everything, but history suggests otherwise. Since 2019, more premierships have come from second place than the minor premiers. Clubs like Penrith have perfected the art of peaking in September rather than burning out earlier, and with player rotation and injury management now a major part of strategy, some fans argue the minor premiership has lost its shine.

Still, topping the ladder offers home-ground advantages and a slightly easier path. For clubs chasing momentum, particularly younger squads, the psychological boost can be invaluable.

The Penrith Panthers Dynasty

Since 2019, the Panthers have been 15–2 in finals matches, a record that dwarfs the rest of the league. Their ability to deliver under pressure, even when key players are missing, has set the benchmark for every other contender.

They took care of the Warriors in Week 1 of finals on the road and now face the Canterbury Bulldogs, a team that has been lacking form in recent weeks.

What separates Penrith is their balance across the park. They don’t rely on one superstar; instead, their system ensures that whether it’s Cleary pulling the strings, Edwards grinding out metres, or their pack setting the tone, they are rarely beaten in effort. The big question in 2025 is not whether Penrith can win - but who can possibly stop them?

Teams That Could Break Through

Canberra Raiders: A heart-breaking loss to the Broncos in week 1 of finals (twice). But don't discount the grit of the Green Machine. This is the best price that the club has been for a long time and still presents value given the performance of minor premiers in finals across the last decade.

Elsewhere, the Melbourne Storm remain perennial contenders thanks to Craig Bellamy’s finals nous, while the Bulldogs and Broncos are building platforms that could see them enter the mix.

The Road Ahead

The NRL Finals are as much about endurance as brilliance. History shows that to win the premiership you almost always need to be a top-two side, but every season brings its shocks. Whether it’s the Panthers chasing another title, the Broncos finding form at the right time, or the Raiders springing a surprise, 2025 promises no shortage of drama.
