Cronulla Sharks vs New Zealand Warriors, NRL Round 14 - Expert Prediction

The Sharks will be aiming to bounce back from a poor last-start defeat to the Roosters when they host the high-flying Warriors on Saturday in the Shire.

Tough game to predict this one. I still don't rate Cronulla as anywhere close to genuine premiership contenders - their most-recent 42-16 loss to a depleted Roosters outfit further solidifies those thoughts - but at the same time, the Warriors have been riding a fair amount of luck this season and my thinking is that it has to even out at some point.

Don't get me wrong, the Warriors fully deserve their third position on the ladder, but a points differential of just +5 doesn't lie - they have been on the right end of some close wins all season, including holding on for a 36-30 victory over the Bunnies last week.

I'm backing a return to Shark Park will spur Cronulla on to victory, covering a -5.5 line, while Over 44.5 points is also tipped, with both teams involved in high-scoring games in their last outings. With Ronaldo Mulitalo suspended, Mawene Hiroti is favoured for Anytime Tryscorer on the wing.

  • Sharks have won six of their last eight games at Sharks Stadium
  • Warriors have failed to cover a +5.5 line in their three defeats this season
  • Sharks have covered a -5.5 line in six of their seven wins this season
  • Over 44.5 points has landed in four of the last five meetings
  • Sharks saw 56 points in their last game; Warriors saw 66 vs Souths last week
  • The Sharks' left winger has scored at least one try in 15 of their last 19 games (Hiroti)
  • Mawene Hiroti has scored a try in three of his last five games

Head To Head

The Warriors have won three of the last four encounters between the teams, including a thrilling 30-28 victory in Round 26 last season, with Dallin Watene-Zelezniak crossing for the match-winning try in the 80th minute.

Cronulla are getting the job done so far this season - they've won five of their last seven games and are sitting in fifth spot on the ladder.

At the same time, they aren't really staking their claim to be premiership contenders, with their last-start 42-16 loss to the Roosters, who were without five Origin players, a perfect example. The fact no Sharks players were selected for Origin also demonstrates how little an impact they are having.

However, Addin Fonua-Blake has certainly been one of the signings of the season - the hulking forward leads the NRL for post-contact metres and will be looking for a massive performance against his former club here.

It's been an outstanding season for the Warriors - they've won nine of their 11 games since their Round 1 Vegas shellacking at the hands of Canberra, cementing their top four spot.

Andrew Webster's side have showcased immense resilience and steel throughout the season, with six of their wins coming by six points or less.

Luke Metcalf has stepped up as one of the premier halfbacks in the competition, while Panthers' recruit James Fisher-Harris will be relishing a front-row standoff with Fonua-Blake in this clash.

Huge blow last week for the Warriors as Mitch Barnett suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Jackson Ford moves to starting prop, while Leka Halasima comes into starting side and Kurt Capewell moves to centre to cover for the injured Rocco Berry.

Verdict

Backing the Sharks to grind out a win at home in a game that covers 44.5 total points.

Mawene Hiroti can take advantage of a prolific Sharks' left side attack and cross for a four-pointer.
