The NRL Round 24 showdown between the Brisbane Broncos and Dolphins promises potential finals implications, despite both teams battling injuries. The Broncos face losses of key players like Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam but have strength in depth with Ben Hunt stepping in. The Dolphins, dealing with a severe defeat to the Roosters, are under pressure to perform. Expect a strategic play with emphasis on defenses and back the Broncos to capitalize on their robust forward pack. Unders might trend, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow remains a tryscoring force.

The battle of Brisbane holds possible finals ramifications as the Broncos and Dolphins collide in a Saturday night blockbuster at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos' premiership hopes went up in flames in the space of a few seconds last week as both halves Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam went down with hamstring injuries that are set to sideline them for at least the next month. To make matters worse, Selwyn Cobbo also suffered a hamstring injury with just minutes remaining in Brisbane's 22-2 defeat to the Storm. However, the good news for the Broncos is they have the experienced Ben Hunt in to cover, while Billy Walters is also no stranger to playing in the halves.

I think Brisbane still have enough firepower to get the job done here. They have a much stronger forward pack than the Dolphins, who are also dealing with an extensive casualty ward. If the likes of Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan can lay a platform and foundation for Hunt, the Broncos have the experience to overcome a Dolphins side who leaked 64 points to the Roosters in an abysmal performance last week. In saying that, I think both sides will aim up in defence in such a big game and after disappointing results last week, so backing the Unders, which has been a trend in this matchup. Can't go past the Hammer at Suncorp for anytime tryscorer.

  • Broncos have won four of the five previous meetings between the teams
  • Broncos have won six of their last eight games
  • Dolphins are coming off a 64-12 loss to the Roosters at Suncorp last week
  • Under 49.5 points has landed in all five previous meetings between the teams
  • Under 49.5 points has landed in five of the Broncos' last six games
  • Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has scored 16 tries in his last 10 games at Suncorp

Head To Head

The Broncos have enjoyed success in the Brisbane derby since the Dolphins entered the competition i 2023, winning four of the five encounters - including a most-recent 20-12 victory in Round 4 earlier this season, with centre Gehamat Shibasaki crossing for a double.

Brisbane Broncos Form Analysis

Just as the Broncos were finally showcasing a bit of consistency and pushing for a top four spot, their season has been left in tatters following the hamstring injuries to Reynolds, Mam and Cobbo.

It appeared as if Brisbane were ready to finally snap their long run of defeats away to the Storm at AAMI Park and they started the game promisingly, but they were never really a chance after Reynolds and Mam both went down chasing a runaway Xavier Coates.

In encouraging news for Broncos fans, their side soldiered on bravely and never threw in the towell, showcasing a steely resolve not always associated with the team.

This is the time for Reece Walsh to step up - he's amongst the most talented players in the world when he's firing, but there's far too many errors and forward passes in his game and he needs to work on his discipline if the Broncos are to still be a threat in 2025.

Brisbane Broncos Team News

Ben Hunt and Billy Walters line up for the new halves combination. Cory Paix gets a start at hooker and Tyson Smoothy joins the bench. Josiah Karapani replaces Cobbo on the wing.

Dolphins Form Analysis

Have the Dolphins run their race for 2025?

History suggests they can't win the premiership after leaking the dreaded 50+ points against the Roosters last week and their depth is being severely tested in these final few rounds.

Currently clinging on to eighth spot on the ladder, with the Roosters breathing down their necks, you get the feeling this is a must-win game for the Dolphins.

However, their form has certainly tailed off over the last month or so. I wasn't impressed with patchy wins over the struggling Cowboys and Warriors and when push came to shove (quite literally) last week, they were exposed, suffering a crushing 64-12 defeat at home to the Chooks.

Francis Molo is out suspended, but veteran Kenny Bromwich joins the bench for his first game since Round 8. Mark Nicholls starts at prop.

Verdict

Both sides have been ravaged by injuries, but I think the Broncos' have the better depth to handle it.

Backing Brisbane to emerge victorious, Under 49.5 points and the Hammer to extend his incredible tryscoring run at Suncorp.
