Randwick Tips September 20

Nick Moraitis Trophy Tips (Race 3)

Randwick Best Bet - Race 3 No. 2 Disneck

Disneck has returned with a pair of sixth-place finishes this campaign, but those results don’t tell the full story. He was strong through the line first-up and again caught the eye second-up over 1200m at Rosehill on August 30.

On that occasion he was badly held up at a key stage and with clear running he probably wins, having still managed to work home well once out in the clear. That effort confirmed he had carried the improvement from last season into this spring.

The gelding came of age last prep, stringing together a winning hat-trick, with all three of those victories coming in succession and two of them at Randwick.

Third-up has been his sweet spot previously, with that winning streak beginning at the same stage of a preparation, so he looks ready to peak again here.

Now back to Randwick and with James McDonald taking the ride, Disneck gets his chance to deliver and shapes as the best bet of the day.

Myplates Tea Rose Stakes Tips (Race 6)

Randwick Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Tupakara

Tupakara remains a maiden after seven starts, but her runs have suggested that a win at this level is not beyond her. She has consistently shown potential and gets another chance to put it together in the Tea Rose Stakes.

She reopposes Apocalyptic after clashing with that filly in the Furious Stakes earlier this month. Tupakara had no favours in the run, forced to settle back and then come wide without cover, while Apocalyptic was able to sprint off a softer passage.

The margin between them was dictated by those differing runs, and Tupakara still closed off well late despite covering extra ground. That effort underlined her ability, even if she has not yet broken through.

The blinkers go on for the first time, which could help sharpen her up, and she has drawn well enough to potentially settle closer in transit.

If she can replicate her strong finishing effort from the Furious Stakes with a kinder run here, Tupakara looks well placed to record her maiden victory in Group company.

Bill Ritchie Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Randwick Value Bet - Race 7 No. 10 Kintyre

Kintyre’s first-up record isn’t outstanding on paper, but several of those efforts were better than they appear at face value. He has been unlucky in recent fresh runs and deserves another chance here.

The gelding comes in off two lead-up trials, the first on August 22 where he went to the line with Joliestar, and the second on September 4 where he produced a strong heat win. Those hit-outs suggest he has come back well.

From barrier three he should enjoy a favourable run, with the ability to position up in the first two or three pairs. That tactical speed can be an asset in this race.

He is generally an honest performer and has produced consistent efforts in this grade, which gives him the platform to be competitive again.

With even luck in the run, Kintyre appeals as a genuine knockout hope at attractive odds.

Yarraman Park Shorts Tips (Race 9)

Randwick Feature Bet - Race 9 No. 2 Private Harry

Private Harry is one of the most exciting runners on the Randwick card as he resumes unbeaten. He made a rapid rise last season, going from a Newcastle maiden win to Group 1 glory in The Galaxy in the space of a single preparation.

That progression underlined his raw ability and professionalism, with each run stronger than the last. Not many horses climb the ranks in such fashion, and he now returns as a genuine spring headline act.

Currently on the second line of betting for The Everest, this is not his grand final, but connections will want him to make a statement here.

He’ll need to if he is to pose a serious threat to Ka Ying Rising on October 18, and the Shorts provides an ideal platform to launch that challenge.

There is still plenty of room for progression, and while that can never be guaranteed, Private Harry has the scope to remain unbeaten and stamp himself again as a star sprinter on the rise.

Peachester Lodge Shoot Out Mile Tips (Race 10)

Randwick Favourite - Race 10 No. 5 Lord Penman

Lord Penman has made an encouraging start to his Australian career and looks ready to step up to the mile. His first run here came on August 16 over 1200m, where he was allowed to find his feet early before hitting the line strongly for second.

All of his wins overseas came between 1400m and 1500m, which adds merit to that debut effort at a shorter trip. That performance showed he has settled into local conditions and has the capacity to improve further.

The gelding has been kept on ice since that run, with his placement carefully managed by Chris Waller. Wider draws have seen him scratched, and he now finds a suitable target.

A step up in distance looks the natural progression, and the stable would not be stretching him to the mile without confidence in his preparation at home.

This is a winnable race despite the setup, and with his profile and upside, Lord Penman can make his mark.
