Caulfield Tips September 20

Race 1 - 12:10PM Sportsbet Fixed Odds Exotics Handicap Tips (1600m)

It’s an open affair to kick off the Caulfield program, with a mix of resuming gallopers and those suited at the mile. There doesn’t appear to be a standout, which sets up a competitive start to the day.

5. Prince Eric caught the eye when resuming at The Valley on August 23, charging home with the fastest last 600m and 400m of the race. The Archie Alexander-trained import showed talent early in his Australian career and looks to have returned in good order. Second-up at 1600m might still be on the short side, but he has the class to figure strongly.

7. Nation’s Call is one to watch fresh, resuming off a campaign where little went right. He was luckless more than once last prep, including in a Caulfield run in May against stronger opposition. Back to this level and resuming at the mile, he looms as a leading chance.

8. Presser is consistent and edging towards another win, having built a solid record through similar company. He’ll be competitive with even luck.

4. Al Duca is honest and fit third-up, likely to roll forward and give a sight. He's no star but makes his own luck on the speed.

Selections: 5,7,8,4.

Race 2 - 12:40PM MRC Member Spring Rewards Handicap Tips (1400m)

10. Xarpo showed promise in her first prep, winning back-to-back races through December and January. She resumed with a tough victory over 1200m at Caulfield, overcoming a tendency to over-race and still proving too strong late.

She failed to fire second-up with EIPH, and her latest synthetic effort was a blowout run given the space between starts. Back out to 1400m suits now, and she has the speed to cross from a wide draw to settle on the pace.

9. Shadhavar chased home On Display on August 30 and put a big margin on the rest. That’s sound form despite On Display being held last week, as she had previously claimed a Listed win in the autumn.

7. Eagle Express is holding form deep into the prep. Runner-up over this track and trip two starts ago, she then accounted for the handy Silver Magnate last time out.

5. Cavity Bay is a roughie who can add value to the exotics. She tends to produce the same honest run regardless of trip and is capable of sneaking into the finish.

Selections: 10,9,7,5.

Race 3 - 1:15PM The Taggart Tips (1200m)

6. Karavas brings race fitness to a competitive affair, having resumed with a strong swooping win at Morphettville last month. She then chased home the handy Cicala, which is no crime, and arrives with solid form lines.

From gate one she has the chance to settle closer in the run, and her slick turn-of-foot will be an asset if conditions allow. The four-year-old did lose a Group 3 victory at start two in Melbourne due to a positive swab, but she retains genuine ability.

2. Austmarr booked her place in the bets.com.au hall of fame when saluting for us at $15 in the last on Golden Slipper Day. She is a big mare who took a few runs to hit her straps last preparation, but the map looks soft up front this time and she’s had three jump-outs to prepare.

4. Miraval Rose was no match for Angel Capital first-up, but that run was still honest. She’s well placed against her own sex here and boasts a perfect top-three record at Caulfield.

1. See You In Heaven made a pleasing stable debut for Matt Laurie and the form has already been franked by Arkansaw Kid last week. She may still be a run short but is capable of featuring.

Selections: 6,2,4,1.

Race 4 - 1:50PM Barastoc Handicap Tips (1100m)

1. Nadal makes his return and could be a sleeper among the sprinting ranks this season. Stretching him further hasn't suited, with 1100m-1200m looking his ideal range.

He was off the scene for 10 months last spring but found winning touch second-up over this track and trip before a luckless effort at Flemington. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper then produced a demolition in The Meteorite, a strong field that included Baraqiel in third, who has since won at Group 1 level.

4. Oak Hill impressed first-up with a slick victory at The Valley and had excuses in his two subsequent runs, including his latest in the Group 1 Moir Stakes. The extra 100m looks suitable now.

8. Klabel shapes as a danger, likely to land a soft run behind what appears a strong tempo. He’s prepared with two trial wins in South Australia and can make an impact fresh.

5. Jigsaw hasn’t won for a long time, so his price is fair, but he has looked sharp in two recent jump-out wins. If that translates to race day, he’s capable of surprising.

Selections: 1,4,8,5.

Race 5 - 2:30PM Sportsbet Caulfield Guineas Prelude Tips (1400m)

6. Planet Red had his unbeaten streak ended when chasing a hat-trick in the McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley, but he lost no admirers in defeat. Sticking to 1200m worked against him in that three-year-old contest, yet he still fought on well and now rises to 1400m.

There are a few he needs to turn the tables on from that Valley clash, but he looked the middle-distance prospect out of the race. The form has stacked up nicely around his first two wins, and this step out in trip is the logical progression.

5. Stay Cosmic was runner-up in the McKenzie Stakes and while perhaps flattered late after securing the saloon passage up the inside, he remains open to improvement. Since his debut victory he has been narrowly beaten into second at all three runs.

3. Space Rider has been all or nothing in four starts, producing two wins and two poor showings. The tongue tie goes on — did he choke down at The Valley?

8. Cinturato faces an aggressive placement after finishing third as a beaten favourite in a Sale maiden. The form from that race reads fairly, and he’s bred to handle the rise in distance.

Selections: 6,5,3,8.

Race 6 - 3:05PM Jim Moloney Stakes Tips (1400m)

The Blake Shinn and Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman partnership has been lethal over the past 12 months, producing 16 winners at a 39% strike rate. Two of those have been with 6. Vivid Sun, who now chases a hat-trick.

Spelled after leading all the way for an easy maiden win in April, she was ridden colder when resuming at Sandown and showed versatility with a strong swooping victory. She’s bred to furnish into a better type and looks capable of stretching out over more ground in time.

8. Ruska Roma was an eye-catcher for third in a good Pakenham maiden on debut when well backed, and she built on that by scoring a first-up kill at Seymour on August 31, where she was given a more positive ride from a low draw.

3. Zany Girl endured a luckless run in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at The Valley, badly held up and never getting a clear crack at them. That effort is best forgiven and she can improve sharply.

2. Ferivia also comes through the Atlantic Jewel and may not have handled Moonee Valley, but she has shown above-average talent in her first prep. Two runs ago she defeated a subsequent stakes winner at Group 3 level here.

Selections: 6,8,3,2.

Race 7 - 3:40PM SEN Underwood Stakes Tips (1800m)

9. Sir Delius made his Australian debut with a strong win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap at Doomben after last being seen in the 2024 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. That Brisbane triumph came over 2000m, and despite 1600m being short of his best, he was only a stride off Lindermann first-up in the Chelmsford Stakes.

The winner was rated perfectly in front that day, but Sir Delius was strong through the line. While 1800m is still short of his peak, the extra furlong second-up should bring him on, and as a lightly raced import, he shapes as the progressive runner in this field.

2. Buckaroo returned with a strong run when chasing home Treasurethe Moment and will only improve as the distances rise. From seven second-up attempts he has three wins and a third, and this is the same race he won last year before going on to finish runner-up in both the Turnbull Stakes and the Caulfield Cup.

12. Anisette wasn’t suited in the PB Lawrence Stakes when forced wide in a slowly run race, but still produced the fastest last 200m of the meeting. She skipped a second-up run and instead won a Flemington jump-out on September 12, which should bring her on for this 1800m test. Already a Group 1 winner in the American Oaks, she maps for a kinder run here.

10. Moira continues to improve with each Australian start and now steps to 1800m third-up. She draws kindly and looks a genuine contender with further progression.

Selections: 9,2,12,10.

Race 8 - 4:20PM Sportsbet Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Tips (1400m)

9. Angel Capital looks perfectly placed up to 1400m, unbeaten in two goes at this track and trip. He couldn’t have been more impressive resuming at The Valley, circling from last to dominate the Chautauqua Stakes.

With 53.5kg he profiles ideally for a handicap like this, which is rarely a race for topweights. He can sprint off any tempo, and the only query is whether backmarkers can make ground at Caulfield.

10. Damask Rose made her Australian debut here over 1200m, lacked the early speed to muster, but was strong late behind dual Group 1 mare Magic Time. Her last two wins in New Zealand were at 1500m and 1600m; up to 1400m and 5kg lighter than in the Cockram are positives, and lightly weighted mares have won three of the last four editions.

16. Sepals was the good thing on Memsie day and delivered accordingly, although the race didn't rate well. This is a bigger test, but he’s a lovely, still-untapped type who deserves respect.

8. Port Lockroy was plain first-up in the Tramway and has no prior winning fresh form, but the Annabel & Rob Archibald yard turns them around quickly. Classy at his best, well suited under handicap conditions, and dangerous if things fall into place.

Selections: 9,10,16,8.

Race 9 - 4:55PM Tobin Brothers Naturalism Stakes Tips (2000m)

17. Half Yours looks set to gain a start with Birdman likely to remain in Sydney. This gelding is also dual accepted on the Randwick card, but this appears the most suitable of his three options.

He resumed with a sound chasing effort over 1500m at Rosehill last month and looked progressive last season, highlighted by a 2400m Listed win on July 5 before a freshen-up.

2. Berkeley Square has been working towards peak fitness and was consistent through a long spring campaign last year. His recent runs have been solid, with the form stacking up well, and he profiles as the genuine 2000m horse in this line-up.

12. Torranzino was a Group 3 winner over this track and trip in April and should improve off his Valley resumption over 1500m. With three wins from five attempts at the Caulfield 2000m, he commands respect second-up.

16. Statuario was brave fresh and looks a player again despite the wide draw. He showed his class last season and arguably should have claimed the SA Derby, so he’s well up to figuring here.

Selections: 17,2,12,16.

Race 10 - 5:25PM IVE > Handicap Tips (2000m)

8. Gilded Water isn’t at D-Day just yet, but he needs to make the progression soon if loftier spring targets are to remain on the table. He was expected to be too classy first-up at 1800m but was only even when third, and a sharper effort is required here.

The import looked a middle-distance prospect of promise through his first Australian campaign, kicking off with a win over Alalcance, who later reeled off a hat-trick of stakes victories last autumn. Mark Zahra sticks from the recent return and that continuity could help him improve.

10. Mr Verse faces a rise in grade but looks an exciting prospect for the McEvoy yard. Freshened before Sandown on August 27, he came from the back against the day’s pattern to score well and appears capable of handling this next step.

3. Whiskey On The Hill was brave fresh at Flemington when posted wide, and his effort over 1700m here on August 30 suggested he might be ready to peak now third-up at 2000m.

5. Kings Valley gave weight to a fitter rival when beaten at The Valley and now faces a stronger BM84 than ideal, but he's an honest type and strips fitter for recent racing.

Selections: 8,10,3,5.
